We are going to add the other two maps

arena_granary
arena_badlands

I like all of the official maps released so far, I'm quite glad to have these two back.

Mach is alright, but I could probably live without it. I'm not sure if people will be turned off having to download a custom map or not.

Great! I think more variety is a good thing for the server.

My problem with Mach is I don't really think it fits with the other Arenas. If you look at all the ones that Valve developed, they're very open maps. Mach, for the most part, isn't. Most of it is very narrow passageways and smaller open areas. This makes it harder for certain classes to be able to retreat, which makes death much more likely for them. I also imagine it's much more difficult for spies to get around since they'll bump into people.

One suggestion I'd like to bounce off the council: I have noticed there are several other community made maps for Arena out there now. I was wondering about maybe having it so we rotate in and out a new map every week. We could have the "Arena of the Week" or whatever. One potential downside to this is it might cause more people to be upset about losing a map they liked, but on the other side of the coin, it'd help keep the server fresh. Maybe people would return to the server every week to see what new arena has been added to the mix.

So since this is an official discussion we can openly express our opinions on the area style as well or do we just need to focus on these 2 maps?

I say add them to the arena rotation server. The arena style of play is very similar between maps, because of this and the fact that the games are so short to begin with, this gamestyle is particularly suited to a rotation style server. If we find that serious amounts of people begin leaving when these maps are up we can always eliminate them.

It's a good idea. The whole rotation of the server works fine, but it can get tiring after the third time around. Variety is the key!

I've said this before:

Certain Rocket Arena servers (both 2 and 3 - not sure about RA and RA4) would run the same map for literally years on end with huge followings.

If Arena mode for team fortress remains popular then we have a good chance of keeping an arena server in good standing for as long as we want. I think there are enough people love TF2 and deathmatch enough that any combination of the two just rocks their world.

I personally hate the arena servers. If you want to wait to play, go play counter-strike. Its retarded, sucks, boring, and last but not least lame. - But that is only my opinion, and i've only tried it twice. So i have no room to talk - at least i can admit i don't play it.

But, its a new style so we must support it. Again, its not about what i want. . . its about what the community wants and what other players of TF2 would like to see. Anything new eGO will support IE maps/style/gameplay/ ect. ect.

So that being said, i hope you guys enjoy arena. . and if you have any suggestions about the arena server, post them here.

HAHA I'm glad you said that GGVW cause I feel the same way. Not very good at all and doesn's stay full very well.

garden you sound a little bitter :) its ok, i feel the same way about ctf maps. besides nothing can hold a candle to the pl and cp gameplay styles.

But, on the flip side, it's one of few of our servers that still attracts people in off-hours. Just the other night, I believe we had like 14 people on. That might not sound like much, but it was 2nd to only 2Fort IR in terms of numbers.

One thing I posted in another thread was that I think some of the problem with Arena is the whole sitting out aspect. Once you pass 24 people on the server, you have people forced to sit out. Get to the full server, and you potentially have people sitting out every other round. Who wants to stay on a server when you can only play 50% of the time?

I know there was some talk about lowering the cap of the server down. That sounds like a good idea, but I know there are financial implications for doing so (which, to be honest, I'm completely hazy on). Would us being able to say we have the most popular TF2 arena offset the fact that we have to kick 8 people off the server?

Yes! :D 2 new maps - tons of new fun! I think our Arena server should have many custom maps as well as the ones valve made so the server never gets boring. I know 4 maps kinda for boring after a while. I'm going on the server right now to check out the 2 new maps though :) I hope some more maps get on the server!

P.s. I know arena can be annoying with the wait and all but the reason why I really like arena is because there isnt sentry farming everywhere like on other maps! Plus every class can be very crucial to a victory

I agree. I actually hate arena servers as well. I don't like the feeling of having one life so I probably stick to the other maps for now

When I first played arena, I must admit, I didn't like it.

However, I gave it a second chance, and I've been constantly playing on the Arena Map server, almost exclusively for the past few days. It can be fun if you are truly into tactics with immediate results. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it.

I will say this though. I think a 32-slot Arena server isn't really good for bringing in people, to be honest. We currently have the highest rated Arena server out there according to GameTracker. I'm certain nobody enjoys waiting to play a game when they joined for the sole purpose of playing. That's what it's all about. Just think about the least amount of effort it would take:

Let's say the server is full. Only 22 people can play at one time at the most. Everyone else must sit in spec. The worst part is that if you are on the losing end of the fight, you are almost guaranteed a spot in spec, since 10 out of the 11 combatants must sit out. Although a price to pay for losing seems justified, it just isn't fun.

If there was a way to allow more players to fight, it may be a little more enjoyable, but until then, it would either be wise to make the Arena server down to 24 slots, or find a new map. I like Arena now, but it just doesn't work right.

Oh yeah, and no crits. Fight the power. :p

Yes, interesting thread, Morbo. :p

Oh yeah, and Vilepickle now has arena_mach2 out. It removes a lot of health packs, the log to battlements is removed, and the boxes in teh middle of the map are removed, to name a few.

So I take it Arena wasn't doing too hotly? I don't know how much interest there is in trying to preserve Arena, but I know we had some good suggestions floating around if the Council is interested in giving them a try before we ditch it.
