My Comp is Dead.

It crushed on Saturday, and I and my friend has been trying to fix it. I have to use linux to get online so I can't play any source games or my spore I bought any 3 hours and just had it done downloaded.

Yeah, steam runs ok in Wine. But just OK. You have to tweak things, like use older versions of DirectX. I ran steam in Wine for a while, but could never quite get my FPS up where they needed to be. They ran consistently 20-30 FPS slower than in windows XP.

To be honest, I'm amazed that Steam will run under Wine at all. I haven't experimented with Wine in years, but the last time I tried to play around with it, it was a chore just to get Notepad to run. Kudos to the Wine team for reverse engineering all of those Windows APIs, but I doubt that they will ever be able to optimize their reverse engineered APIs to the point that Windows apps will run as quickly or as perfectly under Wine as they will under Windows.

This is why I'm a "right tool for the right job" kind of guy. It just makes everything that much easier.

I think I can fix it at the end of this week, and I can't use wine, because I'm using puppy linux to get to my stuff, and thats on a 2 gig memory card.

Thats the problem my Windows Xp lost it's hal.dll file, so I have to reinstall it, but mines was preinstalled. So my friend is trying to burn me the updated verison.
