Yup, a while back (August 28th, I think) I was infected with the completely and utterly annoying virus, AntiVirus XP 2008. I have no idea how I got it but the fact is I need help, I need TF2 
. So I'll walk through what I've done so far.
I was just after installing my used copy of Lego Indy and I was getting massive lag through the cut scenes. I had gotten really frustrated so I manually shut down the computer. When I turned It back on I kept getting a blue screen. I tried restarting several times with no success, until it finally started successfully. Once I logged in I had noticed my desktop had been changed to a warning that I have a massive amount of spyware infections. Then a program (obviously fake) called Antivirus XP 2008 began scanning my computer telling me I had upwards to 4000 viruses and told me to purchase the program to fix the problem. I had this happen a while back and just did a system restore and all better, so that's what I went to do. Sadly, my restore points were missing. So I sprung to google for some answers. So I did a search on how to fix this only to realize that a browser hijack had been put in place. I managed to get to a forum with a heap of help. By this point I had started a scan with Spyware doctor and Mcafee. Mcafee detected 1 virus and spyware doctor had picked up 40 infections (some of which included a keylogger, something that would try to put gay pornography on my hardrive along with many other hacking tools) I had removed what both programs had found.
I then began to follow the forums instructions. I went into program files and deleted Antivirus XP's folders. I then opened MSconfig to stop any components of the program from starting up. I then performed a restart. Once the computer had started up again, I then went into my C:/Windows folder in search of the last component of the program. I had found it and removed it. Now that I assumed I had cleared the computer of this program I moved onto my desktop problem which was unchangeable. I had continued to keep following the forums instructions. I was told me to open a program in run (the name escapes me) but from there I re-enabled all the tabs in display and fixed the fact that I couldn't change my desktop.
At this point I assumed I was in the clear but the browser hijack was still in place, and now there was an even worse problem, the virus managed to delete my RUNDLL32.exe file. So now I windows has no idea how to open anything, so that's up to me.
So this is where I'm at now. I'm planning to format the computer, but my Windows install disks are missing and after reading what this thing can do I'm a little worried. So basically I'm asking if anyone has ever had this thing or any advice to fix this or any idea if there's any files I missed please help. Other-wise I'll continue my search for my install disks and format the hard drive.
