The scatter gun shoots about once a second, and requires reloading. Pointblank damage is about 135 if all shots hit. Crits at about 205

The bat shoots at about twice a second, and does not require reloading.
Pointblank damage is about 45. Crits at about 105, and crits more often than scatter gun.

Discuss your opinion, as my brother and I had a debate about which is better, with myself supporting the bat.

I like batting people, but the honest truth is that in most circumstances it just leaves you to vulnerable at that close range. So I say the scat, however it can be situational.

Scattergun, it's still extremely effective at like 5-10m when the bat is not.

If anything just shoot the 6 scatter guns shots then bat it out.

Scattergun. It's superior in every way. Only reason to use bat is to fool around or to follow up after emptying your scattergun.

I like batting a little more then shooting. Manly because he says "I should be on a baseball card." And the feel that I just beated you, and you could do anything to stop me.

P.S. What about the Pistol, it's what I use most of the time, because I have to stay so far away.

I don't know about you, but I don't particularly feel like attempting to bat a heavy. or a pyro. or a demoman. or a soldier. Frankly, I don't really want to run and bat anything, because there is an excellent chance that if they see me, they will get several shots off before I get close.

Melee when the other person isn't meleeing is just bad news.

Scattergun all the way. (or pistol).

ehh, bats don't work for me. The scattergun just seems more efficient close up then trying to get within melee range and bat em. Plus, you'll finish them off faster and have a few more seconds to spare

scattergun can 2 shot most classes, 3 shot if youre unlucky. I once batted a sniper 5 times and he didnt die. Scattergun all the way, but I'll use the bat if I want to humilate and then taunt them :)

Melee's too unpredictable. Fun if you want to humiliate a Heavy/you're goofing off. Otherwise, i'd stick to using the Scattergun. That thing's deadly.

Bat is a last resort.

Scattergun -> Pistol -> Reload/Run/Bat for most cases. If your targets aren't dead by the time you're out of ammo on both weapons, you have a potential problem on your hands and it's time to decide whether you can afford to reload/bat or whether it's time to bail out.

Scatter gun is more effective in my opinion as you can run around enemy's shooting them without getting close to them.I personally would rather go fight a heavy with a scatter gun than head on with a bat and get my head torn to pieces. But that's just my 2 cents.

I think it depends on the situation. If your attacking someone from behind who is unaware, then have some fun with the bat. If you are being chased by a frantic pyro on your tail, use scatter. If a heavy is eating a sandvich, beat him with the bat :D

being chased by a pyro I find the pistol to be better, but then again I seem to have terrabile luck with the scatter. Sometimes it works great but in high action situations its better to use the scatter gun that way other enemies cant guess where you are going to be wile you attack, you have more of a chance evading rockets comeing from soilders who see you, useing the bat they just have to shoot their ally and your dead.

so I vote scattergun

I prefer the Scattergun, myself, but then, Scout is my worst class, so I'm not really good with either of his two stronger weapons.

I've gotten squashed, at full health, by enough single shot scatterguns to make a grown man cry.

Not that I've cried. I meant grown men over the age of 31

Psshh way to include the pistol. Its a scout weapon too ya know!!

Only time I break out the bat is if I have no scatter gun ammo or if I'm to the point of reloading every shot and I can't seem to hit/kill the opponent. Then I just say screw it and try to circle them and have a fun time whacking away.

Scattergun 6 32 84-105 (180 crit)
Pistol 12 36 20-22 (45 crit)
Bat N/A N/A 24-46 (105 crit) [about 2 hits per second]

Stats from TF2 Wiki. The bat is to unreliable in most cases.

To add something to this. You should ALWAYS be running with your pistol out (scatter gun in tight places/rounding corners). But in open areas where it's clear you don't have the element of surprise you should be shooting non stop with your pistol at your target and switch to scatter when your within a decent range. With the element of surprise just run up as close as possible and scatter. It's so deadly close range most people don't react in time.

Bats you have to hit (and not miss) constantly. With the scatter gun, you can still injure them even if only a few shots actually hit him
