I have found that forward motion does help increase the range of my shots. I don't know if it is a psychological thing for me, but I also feel like holding down the clicker on the grenade shots gives them a bit of a boost too (I'm sure I'm just seeing things). But by all means give it a try. Some demos don't even mean to do have the shots they take, it just comes down to luck.

There is a trajectory stagger with the demo nades too. Try putting your crosshair halfway between a doorway and a wall and put about maybe 15 ft between you and it and fire. I guarantee you 2 shots will hit the wall, while the other two sail by harmlessly. Some will pitch more left or right than other shots.

Just something I've noticed.

I've definitely noticed that too. Goes back to the whole rotation/spinning of the nades that a few of the guys mentioned earlier I bet :)
 
All in all it comes down to sg's are helpless against a good demoman. You either need a team that continues to patrol around your sg and disrupt letting the demomen getting setup, or you gotta be a proactive engi that's out killing anyone that gets in your "zone".

Most rounds I get more kills from sneaking up on people trying to kill my sg than actual sg kills.

As far as the original question - pipes do some crazy things and it takes ALOT of practice to make them do what you want when it comes to distance and crazy bounces.
 
There's always a lot of voodoo associated with all things that you want to excel at... apparently being a demoman isn't much different. ^_~

My opinion? Kiss your grenade launcher, whisper sweet nothings to it, and then you'll find it works better than ever.

I find if you do the "drink your grenade launcher taunt" it helps me own everything :D
