Alright, heres the deal.
My virus software locates and deletes basically any virus i get. However, for the longest time, ive had a virus on my computer. Its not serious, i just spams a message till i delete a process in the task manager.

I know EXACTLY where the file is located on my computer, but my anti-virus wont delete it, and i cant delete, cause it says: "file cannot be deleted, may currently be in use, yadda yadda".


So my question is, how can i manually go in and erase this file from my system.
Ive had multiple people tell me it can be done. But how?

Help would be much appreciated...

you don't need a program to do it. go into safe mode by hitting f8 at start up. (pretty sure its f8 safe mode.)

go to file and delete it.

also btw trend micro sucks. get zone alarm free and avg8 free. they are not trials and are offered legally free :D
 
Agreed....just boot into safe mode (yes, it is F8) and then delete the .exe file from there. Also, you might want to go to Start -> Run... -> msconfig and then click on the startup tab. If the malicious program is listed in there, go ahead and uncheck it (then apply and reboot). You will also need to click a checkbox after the system reboots to tell it not to warn you that the system has been changed (you already know it has because YOU opened msconfig).

Then once you're done with all that reformat and install Ubuntu. :D
 
If booting into SafeMode doesn't work, get Kaspersky. Over 600 monthly updates and the strongest virus definitions file on earth, it blows away any other pitiful antivirus apps. And to think I used to use Trend...
 
It might be a secret program running in your windows task manager, end all of the task of each program except explorer.exe, delete it than reboot, if that doesn't work, use safe mode and delete it.

I recommend you use Nod32, Kaspersky, Zonealarm, and the recommended. Don't use Avg 8 or norton, they are RAM hogs.
 
There is a program called FileShredder. I strongly recomend it, it can delete anything.

FYI, every thread that is created relating to a virus, there is always someone to mention their virus scanner and how much better it is that someone else's. Please, for the sake of the universe, read the thread and understand that he already has a virus scanner.

This thread is also 2 days old, and the creator has not responded in two days, meaning (or suggesting) that he has already solved the problem.

Just because one person got helped - doesn't mean people won't use the search function afterwards. ;) 2 days is still pretty fresh. It hasn't started festering yet.

Fileshredder won't delete a locked process. A custom forcedelete CAN - but watch what happens when you do delete it (BSOD).

I'm surprised nobody mentioned msconfig - you can hunt down the system process of the file, and even the drive-by file that's most likely located in temporary internet files directory - and disable both.

Another thing to think about is a software restriction policy (Google it.) - and DISABLE software from running in anywhere but the specified locations ( program files, your download directory for things YOU download, etc.... )

That's what I have on my systems - it kills the efforts of most drive-by downloading.

AVG 8
Spybot Search & Destroy
Ad-Aware

AVG is arguably one of the best FREE pieces of anti-virus software out there.
I've personally never used Kapersky or whatever, but I've never really heard bad about that one either.

Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware are both Spyware scanners, again, probably the best free ones out there. Theres also A-Squared, but quite often that will display results that it THINKS is spyware, when it really isn't so if you choose to use this one, you have to know what your looking for.

To whoever it was on page one that said AVG is a resource hog, check your facts bud.
Norton and McCafe are the two biggest resource hogging pieces of Anti Virus software that you could possible use, period. Again, not sure about Kapersky, but NOD32 and AVG are very, very light weight on your system. Unfortunately you have to pay to use NOD. So basically, I'd recommend giving AVG (or Kapersky) a shot to see if this will help you. AFTER you've gone the safe mode route like the others suggested.
