So easy a caveman..? or FPS setup from the future? Binding Idea.

I tried this last night and got pownt in the face pretty tough. I had to go back to default, except for having the mouse scroll go to specific weapons is MUCH easier! So I just kept that part and went back to wasd...

Wow! You are not the first I have seen with the goofy click to go forward setup. I am too stuck in my old ways to change, but more power to ya for trying to change it up a bit.

Strange. I do know someone who uses the arrow keys and RCTL, RSHIFT, ENTER, 0, 1, 2, 4 and some really goofy thing that I don't understand. He claims its a result of MMO's.

w=forward
s=back
a=left
d=right
mouse 1=fire
mouse 2=alt fire

That's all you need in life. =)

Sad to say, I would throw my PC out the window if I ever attempted that mess. Not to offend you or anything. It's just that the wasd keys are like LAW to shooters.

Good luck with them, though. =P

I have a similar setup that I've used since I was 8ish

Mmmmm, when I was 8ish...I don't think we had anything! When I was a bit older we had these niffty devices that you could use to control your movement with your right hand and fire by pushing the single red button with your left hand! Not sure what a keyboard was at the point :)

And to echo another post: Change. Is. Bad.

Left mouse button - Fire
Right mouse button - Move Forward
W - Move Backward
A - Strafe left
D - Stafe Right
S - Crouch
F - Alt Fire
X - Weapon 2
G - Weapon 3
Left Shift - cycle weapons
R - Reload
Mousewheel back - taunt

I usually bind middle mouse button to alt fire, but for TF2, F seems to work easier.

That's actually real similar to my control setup. Mine is a carryover from the days when you could play FPS without a mouse. Games like Wolf 3d and Doom only required you to line up an enemy on the X axis and the game would take care of the up/down axis for you, so I didn't really start using a mouse until the Duke Nukem 3D days. Then I just found it easier to keep using the arrow keys for movement. Plus, WASD is really about the least ergonomically correct position for your fingers to be in.

My TF2 setup:

Arrow keys: foward/back/strafe
RCTRL: Crouch
RSHIFT: Alt-fire
ENTER: Reload
Mouse 1: Fire
Mouse 2: Jump
Mouse 3: Call for medic
Mouse 4: In-game talk
Mouse 5: Screen shot and Ventrilo talk. Yes, I take pictures every time I talk in Vent.
END: Use
F8: Explode

Other than that, I use all of default keys, G for taunt, Y for teamchat, etc. Note that Alt-fire and Reload are on the keyboard. These are also carry-overs from the days of Quake 1 and Duke Nukem 3d where you didn't have to reload your guns or alternate fire modes.

I actually got the first 5-button mouse on the market back in my TFC days, just so that I could get more easy to reach buttons for timing grenade throws.

I've actually been thinking about buying the Fragpedals from ThinkGeek and moving my push to talk keys to those. The Fragpedals: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/input/8e46/

A friend of mine uses the numpad to move around for FPS games, duno how he does it!

wow what a weird setup

I need to unbind 'G' from taunt cause I keep accidentally hitting it when I do voice chat 'V' in game :(

I'm old school gamer as well and WASD is the only way to move around. That and I'm too old to learn new tricks ;). I remember the "good ol' days" (as others can too I imagine) when games used the IK<> and WSCV (You had to use both hands back then one for up/down one for left/right) back in the Apple II days. The first game that I played that really used the mouse and keyboard was the old network tank game Bolo (back in the early '90s). Up to that point all keyboard gaming (ie Marathon) was primarily done on the numpad and thus used the right hand.

I had to retrain my brain so that I could move the tank with the keys with my left hand so my right hand could use the mouse to navigate my little green man (I tried moving the mouse to the left hand but failed miserably =). Man that took awhile, but I finally mastered it and it carried over well into Unreal Tournament.

Those are some definitely unique keyboard configurations used by others here. More power to you, but I'll stick with what I know now.

ps- Yes, I grew up on Apple/Macs. I had to switch for work purposes about 10 years ago and have been a PC gamer/worker ever since. Although I can do it all from a Mac now ;)

Moving around your fingers is extremely wierd feeling, but i think you get used to it pretty quickly. Even though i use the standard stuff. Though i will say i hurt my pointer finger a while back and was forced to shift over to use my pinky for "a" instead of the finger next to it, it was really wierd at first but i havent gone back since, i know its pretty different but you get the point...i think...
