Old HDD to New Mobo

Ok, so I just got my new mobo, heatsink, cpu, and ram today. And I was wondering will my old HDD will be fine after uninstalling all the other crap of the old mobo.

Right now I have an Asus p5kc Mobo
moving HDD to: Asus Rampage Formula.

Help please, its 12:28 and I'm too tired to think
 
Depending on how old the OS is you should be able to just plug in the HD and boot up update the drivers. Thats what I did recently got new mobo ram memory used the HD I already had.
 
it's a % chance it will or will not work... sometimes it causes the system to never make it into windows, sometimes it works fine... I went from a Via to a Nforce chipset mobo and it wouldn't boot off the hdd... but when I went from 1 ati chipset to another atichipset mobo it worked fine...
 
So you are planning to use the existing OS on that HDD with your new components? That might not work. But if that is just a storage HDD then you are fine.

Por que? I mean..Why? I built it. :confused:
 
doesn't matter, most of the time chipset drivers are loaded before windows completely loads... if they conflict you'll either get continuous restarts or blue screens

Kodiak Hit the nail on the head.

If you are chaging to a motherboard with a entirly different chipset you should format the drive and load Windows form scratch.
 
The problem isn't the drivers, you can update those, run CCleaner and be set. The problem is that if you used an OEM Windows version (most likely, they're cheaper), then the install is restricted to THAT EXACT motherboard. If you used a retail copy (with a box, EULA, etc), then you'll be fine.

I have the retail of XP Pro, and it did it to me... you can't update drivers and run cc cleaner if it won't let you get into windows so you can actually do something...
 
Whoa! I didn't need to reformat. I installed the new mobo. new cpu, and new heatsink and ram.
I had some issue for like 10 mins.

1) On 1st boot mouse and keyboard wasn't running.
2) While on 1st boot, the little notifying bubble was going crazy:
a) new hardware found
b) found saitek keyboard
c) Logitech mouse found
ect...
3)Ran safe mode and hoped I can install the drivers, but couldn't
4)Tried reformatting, didn't let me (had to update bios)

So I ran windows normal and it was fine, updated Bios and everything :D

went from a p35 to a x48 in hours...
 
going from intel chipset to intel chipset is gonna give you a pretty good chance of success, you never said what mobo you were changing to. Great to hear, glad everything worked out for ya.
 
i would just buy one of those 20 dollar HDD enclosures and now u have a portable drive that you can get all your info off the drive and carry around wherever you go
