The title says it all, and it doesn't ONLY pertain to AVG, that's just the most contant one. I could get any type of popup and it will minimize my TF2 game. My computer is older than most, and this takes about 2-3 minutes to fix itself, and 9/10 times my game will disconnect as a result.

I did some ample searching and came up with not much. Is there not a startup command or something I can run with TF2 that gives it priority over anything/everything else?

I don't fully understand the question, but if you are having problems with AVG and TF2 then I would recommend disabling the anti-virus while on TF2. Personally I don't use AVG 1) It doesn't support vista well 2) I kept having to uninstall do to these annoying errors. I use ANTI-VIR....maybe try that out instead of AVG? http://www.free-av.com/

thanks for the quick response, but the AV isn't really the problem here. I'm fine with AVG, but I wanted to know if there was a startup command or maybe 3rd party app that can keep TF2 from losing focus due to popups of any kind.

Hmmm, I don't believe there is. What kind of pop ups are you talking about? Popups due to AVG? When I had AVG it kept giving me this error popup when I was playing TF2, and any other game. It looked like:
avgerror.jpg

Is that what you are talking about?

ANY popup. Alot of progs use popups. Especially when they need updating. Which is the particular AVG popup, always telling me to update virus defs. Thanks for the suggestions.

No I don't believe there is a program out there like this. You may want to search around google.

What I would do is figure out why the programs are popping up in the first place. If you can figure out how to make them stop you are good to go. Maybe in the case of AVG, go to the website and re-install with the newest available version. For other things, try checking through the preferences to see if you can disable popup notifications?

On a side note, I have most of my programs that needs updating set to check and install updates in the middle of the night when I am sleeping. Maybe try this too...

On a side note, I use AVG on Vista without a single problem! :)

There are registry options to disable tooltips - like those bubbles that pop up when you hover over an icon in your system tray.

That may stop it.

There's also the shell (explorer) option "always on top" - which should automatically be enabled for the TF2 window ... however if your update program has this enabled, it'll force its way to the top. Disable the "always on top" option for whatever program(s) are giving you problems.

The other quick & dirty (but it'll work nice) option is to disable updates, or schedule them for when you're (definitely) not using TF2 - like when you're sleeping or at work/school.

If power consumption is a problem - or you normally turn your PC off while you're out/sleeping - here's a fix for that. Schedule ANOTHER task using windows built-in Task Scheduler that consists of this console command:

"shutdown -s"

Run it at some time AFTER you think the updates will be finished ( like 20 or 30 minutes, or however long it usually takes to update everything. )

Only downside is if you're ever using your PC at those times ... um, it'll autoshutdown.

If you want to workaround that-

"shutdown -s -t 30"

This version gives you 30 seconds to press WIN+R and run this command:

"shutdown -a"

... which will stop the shutdown process. ;)

Good luck. ;)
