The Insurgency disscusion thread

A bit about INS

Just a little bit of info on INS and how it plays
What is it?
INS is a FPS (first person shooter) mod created for the source engine, its free to download and pretty popular.

My personal opinion on how it plays is this: Its Call of duty 4 imported to the source engine, it feels like COD4. It doesnt use crosshairs, its a class based game, and its set in the present time war.

How is it?
I think its a very enjoyable game, it has a pretty distinct feel to it, in that it doesn't play like say...counterstrike.

  • Friendly fire is on at all times, with no indicators for enemy or friendly, so you need to watch your fire.
  • No mini-map, the only indicators for where to go, are the letters for capture sites, and the landmarks of the map.
  • No cross hairs, only iron sights or hip fire. (and scopes for snipers)
  • Class limits: there's a limit to how many class's can be on a team (ex. 3 snipers per team or something)
  • No kill/death indicator: The only way to know if you killed someone is
    1. Physically see their dead body on the ground/see them go to ragdoll
    2. The top left box: It will tell you if you killed anyone.
  • Be prepared to die, ALOT. Seriously the only indication to being shot/ shot at is your screen goes super blurry. By the time it does that, your already dead.

Judgment
I like this mod alot, its got an interesting and new feel to it. Id recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good/challenging FPS + its free. Remember, there's essentially indicators for anything, be it kills, map, cross hairs. Making it sort of a realism simulator. Its alot of fun, but quite challenging.

Just so ya guys know, all you need is ANY SOURCE GAME it does not have to be hl2, since most people in the clan have a source game, all you need to do is download the game

I love this mod. It's so much better then the last time I had played it. I love it how it's the opposite of every FPS ever. It's not run and gun, it's pure tactical. If you run off on your own and not tell your team, you'll get capped by your own team.

Ya, you really gotta scope out the area before doing ANYTHING.
And i know that you can turn it off mystery, but that would literally ruin the game completely.

It's pretty difficult right now to distinguish between friend and foe. Especially if the Insurgent is using the full headwrappings. Usually I look for the towel on the head/helmet, but then I noticed they look too similar to tell that way. I really need the person to look at me to tell if they have the face mask or not. Fortunately, several Marines carry backpacks so it's a little easier to see them from the back. The big problem is when the Insurgents use headwrappings and that shirt similar to desert camo. In that case, forget about it, they're gonna kill me.

I played it when it first became available on Friday on some non-eGO servers, thought it was kinda meh, and promptly deleted it. Gave it another go tonight since eGO started a server, and holy cow does this play completely differently on a server with people talking and communicating.

If you've tried it before and didn't care for it, you might want to try it again on our server, it's like night and day pubbing it vs playing with teammates. The downside is that not having a mic is a huge disadvantage.

Out of curiosity though, who are the admins for the server? Just so we know who to bug if we see stuff happening.

eta: Also, is it 24/7 baghdad? Or will there be a rotation?

Yeah it's quite easy to accidentally shoot a friend instead of a foe because of the similarities. Also, some maps have areas that are really dark so that makes it even HARDER to tell the difference.

All DoD admins currently should have admin powers on the server. You can pester me if you need to. Also, it is a rotation server, or at least I think it is supposed to be. One map, singhar (sp?) or something like that bugs though and the rounds never end.

I'm looking at their pants and chests. At medium range it's pretty easy to tell the difference between the colors the insurgents wear and the Marine MARPAT camo. There's a learning curve with this game for sure. You can't just run up the middle of the map and shoot whatever you see moving. You go from cover to cover and ID targets before you shoot. There will always be moments of being startled or a teammate trying to flank the other team and not telling you about it, but other then that it's easy to not tk after some practice.

I like the game because it's so amazingly real. The only thing I dislike is how you die. sure it's real, but how can you see when the first bullet to hit you blinds you? for me it has turned into a "Who pulls the trigger first?" kind of game. I'm used to being shot at and having a chance to return fire.

I've got the devil's luck so I shoot like a madman and can sometimes come out of those situations the winner, even after starting to be shot at first. I still say my favorite was shooting at one Marine, running out of ammo completely, threw the gun away as 2 more came around a corner and managed to pistol them both. Got me an M4 out of that tussle.

I had one of those last night too, came around a corner to find a marine just as surprised to see me as I was to see him. We both opened up from the hip and managed to empty our clips without actually hitting anything. I got lucky and connected with my pistol while he was trying to reload. Sadly when my two extra marines came up behind him I only managed to pop one before getting plugged.

Thinking of that, has anyone managed to hit anything when shooting from the hip? I find if I don't have iron sights up I might as well not fire, because I'm not gonna hit anything. Which means that some guns with their gigantic iron sights are just painful to use.

Yup. That previous situation I mentioned I actually hipfired with the pistol. I used to play HC CoD4 almost daily, so I have practice with that. It was weird though, cause for a while I was an insurgent sniper with that bolt action sniper, don't remember the name.

Killed 5 guys right out of the start because they didn't realize what was happening. Picked 2 off as they were running, killed 2 others trying to hide behind a dumpster, and the last one thought I was an ally because I wasn't shooting at him (cause I was reloading) and then shot him afterwards. He was easily close enough to tell I wasn't a friendly. Just goes to show you how much trouble some people have trying to distinguish friend and foe. I didn't take fire even once during that situation.

It's a fun game, kinda hard to knock a FREE game :) ...at first, I kept wanting to use my knife key ala COD4 when i got behind an enemy :o

So far I'm having issues telling friend from foe at any distance.
While I'm taking a closer look to see which it is, they're shooting me

One time I snuck up behind a marine and knifed him in the back twice, he turned around while I was stabbing him, reloaded his gun, and proceded to shoot me into pieces. Never use the knife, run to a resupply station. Shooting from the hip is useful, and although it takes more ammo than firing with the sights it has often saved my life while using my shotgun. I have had too many situations to recall one particular one when I went on a massive kill streak, although one time when using the ak-74 I single handedly depleted the enemy team's reinfocement tickets...

Best game out there. Its realistic. In real life, at war, you dont just shoot blindly...You have to have something called positive identification, or PID. This ensures that you arent shooting and killing your teammates. Realistically insurgents arent going to wear a uniform either. They wear clothes that you and I would wear everyday. Props to the creator of this game.

The weapon models and sounds are dead on. All of these weapons are or have been used in Iraq and afghanistan by both the insurgents, and American military forces.

After a couple of hours I realized that you can also bring up the map to which has a live display of where your teammates are.

Kinda wish we'd known that earlier in the night, it would have saved a lot of "Do we have the bus?" "No, we don't have the bus." "How bout the ditch? Anyone in the ditch?" "Yes, I'm in the ditch! Don't shoot me!"

Though some of the best highs I've had in the game so far have actually been spotting for other teammates. Nothing quite like getting positive id on an enemy running to cover where I know teammates are, being able alert them, and watching them open up the instant the enemy comes around the corner.
