How is DSL for Gaming?

My Comcast is out most of the time so I'm wondering about 3 mb DSL. I could use some input.

Works fine for me... has worked fine for the last.. 7-8 years? Although we've upgraded many times to keep up ;D But not in the last 2 or 3 years.

I'm using the AT&T 3Mb and it works fine.

I'm actually far from the "central hub" but don't have trouble with downloads or uploads.
Always have been using DSL and will stick with DSL, I'm not a big fan of cable modem.

DSL is fine... however, usually it is slower than cable... get FIOS. the end.

We have 1.5mbps DSL, and while it usually works fine for gaming, it is rather slow, and has periods where we get some real slowdowns. Would rather have cable, and would much rather have FIOS.

Either way though, if your comcast is out most of the time, I would first talk to comcast and see if theres a reason for it, otherwise, the 3mbps DSL should serve you fine.

I would go with FIOS but Verizon doesn't have service at my area at the moment. I currently use Comcast.

I got 3 MB from Quest, and I usually get a latency around 86 on our servers, I live in Wyoming, I don't know where the servers are though. 3 MB works great.

I personally like my DSL connection more then my current cable connection. i was located right next to my DSL provider so the connection was rather shibby... now i have cable (it was cheaper) and its a bit slower pretty much because everyone around me has the same freakin cable company that we do!

FIOS would be great but not available in my neighborhood. If Comcast doesn't make it right soon I'll have to go DSL. I live 200 miles from the servers in San Antonio and I'm being routed from Houston to LA and Ohio and getting a ping of about 100. Before the rerouting my ping was 16. Nobody knows how to fix that part.

Comcast is a really crappy company...I'm just a customer because there's no other faster ISP in my neighborhood. It's either Comcast or dial-up.

Today is Comcast's last chance to get it right. I've had 10 techs out here and when they come it's either working or they put a new end on the coax. From the poll to the PC everything has been replaced but I'm losing the signal at the modem which has also been replaced twice.

It's not bad but more expensive for me. I'm close to the central hub but the cable internet grid where I'm at is not bogged down and cable is cheaper.

Alright - so it sounds like everyone has given their opinions ;-) As far as gaming is concerned, a 3mb connection through DSL should be fine - assuming you're not too far away from a hub. Obviously your experience may vary. I'd suggest running with a 6mb DSL connection if you're going DSL, but that's just my personal preference. I feel the need...the need for SPEED!

I have 10mbs through a crappy company called CenturyTel, it costs an extra 10 bucks a month, but with my roommate and I not having cable it works out in the end! Also, with a higher connection speed I'm guaranteed at least 6mbs, which is solid for anything.

I had Comcast and then switched to Verizon dsl because my Comcast kept going out so much. The Verizon dsl was much more reliable. Never had a problem with it. I had 10MB Comcast and went to 3MB Verizon. You did notice higher pings with the Verizon dsl but it was a consistent ping where as with the cable internet your ping can change alot just from the time of day that you play at. It was kinda nice knowing when i joined a server that my ping wouldn't be jumping everywhere. I would much rather have had the Comcast when it came to downloading files though. I seemed to be able to get better speeds even with the variable connection comcast provided. The dsl download speeds were just quite a bit slower and made things take a while. Definately don't go with lower than a 3MB dsl if your going to do it. Anything slower you will want to shoot your self.

On another note, when I made the switch from Comcast cable to Verizon, Verizon had a deal where you could test out their service for a month and if you decided that it wasn't right for you then you could cancel. I did that so that I could have both connections at once and compare them to figure out what was right for me. I decided that the more consistent dsl worked better at the time. I've moved since then and I gave Comcast another try. So far I haven't had as many dropped connections as I did in my old place so it hasn't been too bad.
Talk to Verizon and see if you can try out their dsl for a month and deciding for your self is the only way you will know which you should do.
