Pop vs Soda

Why not just drink sugar water....... same thing without the fizz.

Customer: Yeah, can I get a coke? :)
Me: Sure, I'll be right back. :)
Customer: Wait, I haven't told you what kind I want yet! :(
Me: ...what?
Customer: I said I want a coke, but I didn't tell you what kind yet!
Me: Um... what kind of... *shudder*... coke would you like? :(
Customer: A pepsi, please. :)
Me: ... is coke alright?
Customer: That's fine. :)
Me: !bang

:p This made me laugh quite hard.

Most states have a general consensus, but then when you get to Alaska...What happened? :x
Anyway, I just say Mr. Pibb, because there is no other soft drink as far as I'm concerned.

Well, when I lived in Canada as a kid, I always called it "pop." Then, I moved to Florida, but still called it pop until social culture got to me and I eventually converted to "soda" when I was 9, I think.

A carbonated beverage may be the correct term for it, but think about it. Do you really want to say a word with 7 syllables when you can settle for 1 or 2? :p

for me its its all about how your saying it:
"What pop do you have?" or if in a restaurant: "Coke or Pepsi?"
"I'm gonna go get a coke." - Referring to me coming back with a brand name soda not necessarily a Coca-Cola.
"I'm gonna get a soda". - Shoot All I have left is off brand

I'll settle this debate.

Pop is an onomatopoeia, you can not drink a sound and an adjective. Soda is a noun, it is possible to drink a noun.

Pop can be ambiguous, whereas Soda will always correctly describe a carbonated beverage.

Prove me wrong...go...

Looks like my state (Arizona) is a "soda" state. I personally say I'm going to get a coke, even when I'm getting something other than a coke. It's like saying, "I need a Kleenex." A company gets so popular, its name is used generically.

Well I usually just say "Grab me a DP or Dew." Who really drinks anything but dr.pepper or mountain dew? I mean seriously...

It's Pop. That's all there is to it.
Since I am always right, I guess this is the end of the thread. :O
