Below is a list of mods that members of our community have played first hand and have taken the time to let you know a little about the game. These mods are 100% FREE as long as you own a source game on Steam. The idea of this thread is to give you a description and a short summary of the pros/cons of each mod we have tried out. This list is not all written by me so if you feel like you can add a mod to this list in the same format, go ahead and post it in this thread and I will edit this post to add it in the list. Have fun!

*This mod can be downloaded and installed through the Steam client.

------------------------------

*Age of Chivalry - Steam / Official Site - This game is based in medieval times and is mainly a hand to hand combat game. The game features knives, swords, arrows, flame arrows, crossbows, catapults, usable shields, and more.

Upside: Hand to hand combat is pretty well designed. There are several ways to attack include jabs, horizontal slashes, vertical slashes, using sword to block, etc. This game encourages teamwork to break into your opponent's area and take over.

Downside: The game can be VERY slow. Though combat is creative and fun, it can get really boring for some VERY quick.

------------------------------

*D.I.P.R.I.P. Warm Up - Steam / Official Site - A game like no other source game, this is NOT a First Person Shooter. The game has you control a truck/car/van/vehicle. Your vehicle has a default gun and you can pick up upgrades to make you more deadly.

Upside: The game is very unique. You can aim in any direction while still moving making the game challenging and fun.

Downside: Some players will feel like the game gets old quick. You feel like you are doing the same thing over and over. Controls are free, but yet can feel very difficult and frustrating to use at times.

------------------------------

*Dystopia - Steam / Official Site - Set in a futuristic world, this game plays and feels like nothing you've played before. Players must advance and complete objectives while a unique player called the "decker" goes into a computer world and hacks the buildings computer to operate doors, lifts, elevators, turrets, and more.

Upside: Unique gameplay that controls the map's environment. Classes vary and seem pretty well balanced in the long run. While players choose "Upgrades" to make their classes better or more powerful nothing seems so overpowered that it is unfair.

Downside: Not as many servers running as other mods and most of them are empty at times. This mod needs official Steam support and it would TAKE OFF!

------------------------------

*Eternal Silence - Steam / Official Site - This game is a sci-fi mod that incorporates FPS shooting and the use of space fighting with ships. This game has a back story of the game which is on the main site, but most of the time, you'll be piloting ships rather than using your standard rifle. Much like TF2, the game has capture points and a RED and BLU team, as well as a Scout-like class (known as a Hacker) who can improve a point's defense, making it harder to cap a point.

There are four game modes. Hardcore, which is destroying enemy corvettes (small ships) before either capturing or destroying the enemy ships; CTF, which isn't any different from other CTF modes; Demolition, which is similar to the de_ maps in Counter Strike (except BOTH teams are doing the job with a lone bomb in the middle of the map); and Capture Points, which has one side as attacking and the other defending (TF2 players who've played Dustbowl or Gravel Pit will know what I mean).

If anyone's a fan of space battles in star ships, this is the game.

Upside: Interesting and unique concept. The gameplay is addicting and the space battles are what'll really pull you in. The regular gun fights on land are easy to get used to, but like before, most of the battles will be done in space.

Downside: The space battles are hard to get used to, and some of the game modes can take forever. There aren't too many full servers, so it'll be luck to get one that has a lot of players on it. Respawning can get confusing as well (You have to pick your respawn point, if it's open. Otherwise, the respawn counter will restart).

------------------------------

Hidden: Source - Steam / Official Site - Two teams... "The Hidden" vs Everybody Else. One player is the hidden. The hidden has one hit kills, is very quick, and stick to walls, and in NEARLY INVISIBLE. All the other players are in Co-Op mode in trying to kill the hidden by any means possible. Whoever kills the hidden will have their chance at being the hidden in the next round.

Upside: VERY unique and AWESOME experience. Since there are no real "teams" (People take turns being the hidden) you get to play and hang out with everybody in the server, not just your own team.

Downside: Sometimes it can be hard to find a server to play in, but if you have several friends that want to go play together this isn't a problem. Games can sometimes feel small with only 9-10 people max, but it has to be that way to make things fair for the hidden.

------------------------------

*Insurgency - Steam / Official Site - Set in modern day Iraq players battle to capture objectives (or defend them depending on your commanders orders). The game focuses on being realistic. When you die, you have no clue where it came from you just fall over. A few hits to the chest? Dead.

Upside: Ultra-Realistic forces you to play as a team. Watch around corners so your team mates can run across the street, cover when team mates have to reload, etc. Gives a unique experience that no other game has as of yet.

Downside: Some players can get frustrated because they die a lot and when they do, they have no clue how it happened.

------------------------------

Plan of Attack - Steam / Official Site / Beta 5 Link (Not On Official Site)- A completely objective based game that happens in "rounds". At the beginning the attacking team votes on an objective to attack (A, B, or C) and THAT is the only objective that they can try to obtain that round. The defending team doesn't know which to defend so they must watch and try to discover the plan before their point gets captured.

Upside: Cool idea of a "round based" point capture gameplay. Can get pretty intense when there is only one objective being gone for at a time.

Downside: Very few servers and players playing this game. The development of the mod has been on hold for a LONG time. But recently there has been a community project started to re-write the game and eventually start making regular updates. Remember to get the most updated version HERE!

------------------------------

*Synergy - Steam / Official Site - In a nutshell, this game is Co-Op in the Half Life 2 universe. Maps are specifically designed for multiple players to go through together and attempt getting to the end. Alternatively, you can use any of the Half Life 2 series maps and play Co-Op through the games with your friends!

Upside: Full Co-Op game with levels designed FOR Co-Op. Playing through the Half Life 2 games with your friends is an awesome experience.

Downside: As of right now, there doesn't seem to be THAT many servers. Most servers you find will have high ping, and some constantly crash your game. If you host your own private server for your friends it seems to fix the problem.

------------------------------

*Zombie Panic: Source - Steam / Official Site - This game puts you on one of two teams, zombies or humans. It is pretty self explanatory, the humans try to kill all the zombies. What is the catch? Whenever a human dies they respawn and join the zombie team. As time goes on there are more and more zombies and fewer humans.

Upside: The concept behind the game is fun. They tried to make sure the game is balanced so both sides have a chance at winning. Requires team play for success.

Downside: Plays very slow during some of the game. Humans tend to camp in one room making rounds last for ever and can sometimes be boring.

I have played Zombie Panic and I have to say it is very fun although they do need to institute some way of not allowing Humans to camp a room. Running around in the dark as a human was actualyl heart pounding.

I enjoyed it and hope that it gets better.

The only thing about insurgency that bothers me is not knowing where you got killed from.

am i allowed to add on to this? :)

and (correct me if im wrong) shouldnt this be moved to misc game discussion part of the forums? o.O

anyways nice list rymo :D

Go for it. Just post any mod you can come up with. If you post it in the same format that I did (pros/cons, etc) then I can even start adding mods to the list...

I wrote this a long time ago when steam first started having mods downloadable from the client. I only put in the mods that I had tried myself so I could include an accurate pros/cons of each mod. ;)

If you'd prefer I'll write a review on GE: S
It's the only one I play often...

Definitely, if anybody ads to this thread in the same format as I did with pros/cons so people can really get a good idea in a nutshell what they will experience then I will go ahead and edit the first post. :)

Ooh, ooh, I got one! =D

I could write a section for NeoTokyo if thats cool

That would be awesome, I figure the more mods we add the better, people can get an idea of what they want to try out! :)

I liked hidden source and zombie panic source. though, in hidden it should be easier to kill the hidden

Source forts, classic ctf mod. basicly you build your "forts" yourself with blocks.
http://www.sourcefortsmod.com/
Upside: Really creative idea that plays out well.
Downside: Not to many servers, gets a little boring after a while but worth checking out.

(Pro tip: when you play this game don't go on the uber fort servers, it's way more funnier if you only have 30-40 blocks to build with)

if you are looking for more mods then go to http://www.moddb.com/
alot of the mods on there are dead projects, but there is also listed working mods, upcoming and so on.

Old School Video General Game Review of smashball
http://www.smashball.tv/

General Overview:
This mod is free requiring HL:2. It is a violent sports game (most similar to Rugby + La Cross). The match consists of 6, 3-minute rounds There is a single ball that each team tries to run or shot into the opponent's goal. Run is act of a player possessing the ball going into the opponent's goal. A shot is when a player shoots the ball from outside the goal into the opponent's goal. Runs are worth 7 points, shots 3. The team with the most points at the end of regulation is the winner. In the event of a tie. One sudden Death match is played lasting 3 minutes. If still tied... well I've never had that happen :E.

There are 4 different positions: Forward (FD), Halfback (HB), Fullback (FB), and Goalie (GO). Each team is allowed one goalie and unlimited amounts of other . Forwards are the quickest and most fragile, Halfbacks are more offensive sturdier but slower Forwards. Fullbacks are defensive and strong but slow. The Goalie isn't that mobile and tends the goal. He is very strong and is really hard to take down.

OSVG's Pros and Cons

Neutral:
Very fast past easily 3x as fast as TF2. May or may not appeal to certain people

Pros:
Unique FPS Sports game.
Plenty of servers (many more than initial launch)
-Although currently bugged, you will earn xp and stats are recorded
A tutorial to give a basic feel for game mechanics

Cons:
Not noob friendly (b/c of this newbies tend to not get the ball)
Buggy: Infrequent crashes; it has gotten much better
Team stacking occurs frequently
Some weapons spammed get very annoying

There are other things I'm failing to cover but yeah it's just a general review not really in depth.

OSVG's BIAS score: 9.478 / 10
Smashball = TF2 to me fun wise

OSVG's objective score 7/ 10
This game has flaws and bugs. It is still in the beta; however, there is promise and it's a truely unique game.
