Turning chat off?

Hey guys.
I'm considering getting TF2 for my younger brother for his birthday.
Turning voice chat and sprays off are easy enough to do, and we've generally got a good community. I've just had some experiences where the wrong person comes in and starts swearing and all that.
Do you know if there's any way to turn the chat off completely using the console?

i dont know if there is a way. but our servers 90% of the time has an admin on it, you can alawys find admins too, ie: shoutbox, vent, steam friends.

However, pedro, by the time an admin bans the guy, the damage has been done. Sure, we'll kick for language after an f-bomb, but depending on how young the brother is, That's still potentially a problem.

It's quite a valid concern, and while I don't know the answer myself, I would assume someone like duckdastardly would. However, that said, if you are set on him playing TF2, our servers are totally the cleanest and safest, statistically.

The debate here is really whether you want to take the risk associated with online play. it doesn't matter how we admin; ultimately there will be the one guy who slips out the racist strain of crap before he leaves and is permabanned. That's always a possibility. However, you've got two things going for you.

1). you play on eGO servers, which are probably the cleanest servers you will EVER find.

2). you are playing tf2, as opposed to something like CS. TF2's community is generally more 'PG' than CS.

Type this in console (~ menu):
hud_saytext_time "0"

It disables the chat box.

Obviously change it to hud_saytext_time "1" when you want it back.

How old is your brother? I understand ego's stance and all, but at a certain age, playing the equivalent of the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan ranks a little higher on the do not do list then seeing or hearing the f-word

That's not exactly a bad point. Before you buy this game for your brother, you might want to clear it with your parents first. It'd suck to spend the money and then have them decide they feel he's too young to see the violence.

However, another thing to suggest is that it is possible to turn on a low violence mode which will replace all the blood and gibs with the same sort of stuff you see when birthday mode is enabled. If he's going to be playing on the same computer as you, it doesn't sound like it is exactly easy to switch back and forth. It's something to consider though, just in case.

He's 9 going on 10, but seeing as he's already played it multiple times, this is more to get him off my stats, and my mom off my back. ^^

Besides, there's a no gore/gibs patch as well.

Just a minor correction, you'll want to change the 0 to a 12 when you play.

I have seen an option in the chat box where you can choose to see certain types of messages or not. I think when you hit y to start a chat you can click on "Filter" (or something like that) in the chat box and there are the options. I don't remember if you can turn off player chat but if you could this would be better than disabling the chat box. Then you would still be able to see admin and server side messages.
