I'm not sure if this is the right forum and I also searched and found nothing on this subject.
Ventrilo is wonderful for voice communication but did you know it can do other things as well? For instance you can turn your Vent into a virtual speaker for everyone else to hear. The process is quite simple and is a lot better then putting the microphone up to the speaker. Follow these simple steps and you'll be the life of Vent!
Ok first you need to know that to play music in Vent you will need either 2 sound cards (1 on board and 1 expansion card is fine), or 1 sound card and a USB microphone. This is only if you wish to be able to talk and broadcast at the same time. If you only have 1 sound card and no USB mic then you will not be able to talk at the same time so you will have to idle in chat to take requests or be asked to stop.
Open Setup it should look like this:
Next turn off Push to Talk. I know the rules in vent say don't have an Open Mic but this is different. It is required to broad cast. Should look like this:
Next click "Use Direct Sound" for both Input and Output. Then select your sound card (mine is selected there yours will look different), for Output and input. Finally select the sound card you wish to use for the mixer and for Mux select recording control. Set line to "mic" if you want to hook up an ipod or mp3 player directly instead of using your computer sounds. (note: this will require a male to male 3.5mm audio cable) If not use "what you hear" or "stereo mix" whichever pops up for you.
Next go to Amp and turn Inbound all the way down. Leave outbound alone. I have mine turned up a bit but I don't recommend you do this.
Next go to timing and set Silence time to 1.5 seconds. Turn sensitivity all the way down to 0.
Next click the Events tab and turn off all sound events. Nobody wants to hear when people enter or the server/channel or leave.
Finally if you are going to talk and broadcast at the same time you are going to have to have two instances of Ventrilo running at the same time. To do this right click on the ventrilo icon and go to target. add a <space> -m to the target line. This will allow you to run multiple instances of ventrilo. Then from there just configure the second instance of vent the way I described and join it to the server using an alternate name. For example my Jukebox is called "IceBox" so people can tell me apart from the music player.
Here are a few things to keep in mind while playing music: Not everyone likes your taste in music and not everyone likes listening to one specific genre of music for hours on end. Spice things up, join chat and take requests, just do everything you can to cater to the folks listening.
Let others broadcast too. If you can't provide a very diverse range of music and people are asking for things you don't have then let the people who do have it play some songs. Don't hog the broadcast spot light otherwise nobody will want to idle in the channel.
Do NOT crank the volume. Turning the volume all the way up will cause a massive amount of excess noise and ruin the quality of the sound. Remember it doesn't have to sound good to you, it has to sound good to the people in vent. If you can barely hear it but they can hear it just fine then leave it be.
And finally do not get upset if people say a specific song sucks. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Just try and pick a better song next time or let them pick the music for you.
