While playing in Valve maps server last night, it was brought to attention that two players had same name. When I started checking into it, I found it to be true, same exact name, but different Steam ID.

Look at # 345 and # 301. One of them was causing problems, we couldn't kick one without kicking chancing kicking the innocent party. He knew this and this made it even more frustrating. Anyone have any ideas for the future as I haven't had to deal with this before. I have the rest of the condump if necessary.

It's simple.

Privately tell the innocent one to change his name, then kick the other one, then change it back.

And it won't be the same name. If it was the exact same name, it'd have (1) or something. So it had a space next to it or something. But go with that ^, it should work.

somehow the * appeared during the post along with the space. the reason for the post is that they were identical.
and simple as it seems, the offender continued to mirror players, get it?

You Warn, Kick, and Ban the player who was mirroring other players. Status should give you enough information to do this.

You have their player number, their STEAMID, and their time active. If this doesn't let you figure out who the impostor is, take it to stats and determine which steamID is the punk. This should be made especially easy if he's mirroring other players as well.

That user id would have persisted through nick changes, no? After he changed his name, look at uids 301 and 345---the one with the new cloned nick gets the banhammer dropped on him (or other measures as appropriate).

This time the innocent party was so fed up with the guy, that he left the server. When he left, so did the offender. Made it hard to tell who was who.
Kind of a weird situation.
The one guy was just being a total moron during the incident.

What kind of trouble where they causing? If it was voice or chat related you could silence the one you THINK is causing the trouble and if the other persists you know you made the wrong guess. but a silence doesn't really hurt anyone for long. by that time you could kick the other one and unsilence the innocent party along with a private message to him saying something along the lines of: "Sorry i accidentally silenced you, but i had to find out exactly WHO was causing the problem. and i did. You are now unsilenced, sorry for the confusion."

If it was in-game/griefing related, you can use your Identify Player command to get his steam id.

Turns out this was a guy who I had muted earlier for mic spamming. I ended up kicking him for another reason later. Looks like its ban request time for this idiot.

Easy, for instance if it was: # 345 "PoRkY ChOp$" STEAM_0:1:16614463 10:30 108 0 active

You would type in console: sm_kick "#345" "Abusive"

Kick works by name and userid. See here: http://wiki.alliedmods.net/Admin_Commands_(SourceMod):

Yeah, the problem with that would be the fact that if they both had the exact same name, you wouldnt know which one to kick. I mean, how would you know which one it is to kick using the id?

Obviously I'm not an admin, but you can privately ask the good guy to go to hit escape, go to report bug, copy his user id , then quickly go to spec (where you are) and tell you his user id, no?

Who's the good guy? The fundamental problem is you have two nicks that have identical printing characters, so you can't differentiate between legit and numbskull in-game.

HLstatsX does prove to be useful here---legit (presumably) shows a decent number of stats and playtime, numbskull has several nicks on the Steam ID, some of those nicks collide with nicks that do have actual stats, and there isn't any significant amount of time spent on any one nick.

Well there's that, and then their voices (assuming they didn't join at the same time...). :P

why didnt you just privately message them both and see who would flip out firstthen thats your real one

I am glad that you guys are seeing a little of my frustration. Its easy to kick a player, or to ask someone to leave and come back, but you never actually know which is the bad guy. Thus leading to my frustration.
Tsrwedge pm'd me with some HLStatsX info that reminded me of some other probs that I had dealt with that led to which of these guys was the offender, so props to him for that one.
I had muted a kid for mic spamming, and it looks like that sparked this whole affair. Pretty sad huh?
