My Teachers rig setup suggestions?!?

Okay, I got my teacher Mr. Kennedy to start to game. He wants me to build him a rig for around 1750 ish. So I spent my part of my weekend creating this.

that heatsink is for intel processors, Freezer 64 is for AMD


if he wants a gaming PC you'll get better performance out of a faster Dual-Core processor then you would a Quad and less heat at the same time.


so my opinions, save money on the Dual Core, and put it towards more memory... and fix the heatsink issue...



and that's my opinion based on hardware, I try not to push people into an AMD/Intel/ATI/Nvidia Battle...

the only the things im going to say is, get the MSI 4870 X2 OC edition. its better than the diamond and the cooling system on it works great. I know from experience im running one.:p

also, if you are getting 2 gigs system RAM and a 2 gig video card, you HAVE to have 64-bit running on XP or Vista or else your computer will only use 3.7 gigs of the ram and you will be wasting money.

right dual core will be faster, but you will bottleneck that video card unless you get a super expensive dual core. You could do what I have done, get the Q6600 2.4 ghz (with GO stepping) and overclock the sucker to 3.0+ ghz. then you willl have no bottleneck. Also, there are plenty of games that use quad core when you have them patched up. Just to name a few, company of heroes, supreme commander, assassins creed, and bioshock.

Everything looks fine to me other than what some have mentioned above.

But Intel Core 2 Duo would be a better choice than Quad unless its for like rendering and heavy calculations in which the Quad is fine

Do you get any extra credit?
 
I can fix the proccesor and the heat sink but i cant go intel cause i cant find anything good enough thats under 1750
 
Yep, that 4870x2 will kinda screw your budget.

If you haven't bought it yet, a simple Gigabyte P35 DS3L will do him fine, for a lot less. With the extra money saved, you could get him an E8400 or higher.

Or stick with AMD, but get a cheaper motherboard...there's no need for quad PCIe x16 sots.

Oh, and I'd suggest getting a 2x2GB kit of G.Skill. 2GB is cutting it close with Vista...believe me...I hate it.

You may want to ditch the velociraptor, the real world difference between it and the 640G seagate is about a 1/2 second on the map load time.

Also go with the on board audio, its not nearly as badas some people say. I really doubt your teacher would be able to tell the difference between it and the xfi

I second it.

This helps too.

Get a Cheap Hard drive (with good performance) make that the OS Drive.

get another drive, only about 80 gigs or so. Make that the game drive (again good performance)

then get a huge drive and make that the junk drive.. AKA My documents, My Music, My videos.

His gaming speed will be unaffected by window's processes.

I had this setup on my Velocity Micro before it got stolen. :(
