Looking for the latest in CPU spice to keep your gaming rig flowing? You'd better go find your wallet/purse and head to your local computer shop for a fresh Core i7 (n?e Nehalem), because they are apparently available for sale right now -- before most of the major sites have even received theirs. User gooddog over at the Overclock.net forums has flaunted posted this picture of his recently purchased 3.2GHz Core i7 Extreme 965 CPU. Paired with an Asus P6T motherboard and running at the stock clock rate it scored a 5,606 in 3DMark06, in-line with what earlier testers found. O/C'ed up to 3.8GHz it delivered a tidy 6,608, a mark that surely gives it control of all benchmarks and, thus, the PC universe.

No help in gaming...a 775 CPU would do better.

Thats also the same old story, you cant plan your purchases based on what is coming out in the future... you would NEVER end up buying anything because there is ALWAYS something better coming out.

I think I might buy the Core i7 920. Maybe the 940...I want to be able to get a decent overclock out of it though. I'm going to get water cooling along with it. I can't afford the 965 but I think I can afford the 940. Should I just get a Q9550 instead?

HardOCP did a review of the i7's and at anything above 800 x 600 the current quad cores perform just as well if not better then the i7's when it comes to gaming...

I'd get the Q9550. These i7s (at least the ones that are out now) are more for serious multitasking (IE: server grade stuff, not just video encoding) than gaming.

But....would I take one for free? Hell yes!

Haha...we'll see though. Maybe they'll come out with a better one. I won't be building a new rig until January/February.

Yeah...to anyone interested in upgrading over the next few months - I'd suggest waiting. This article shows some of the benchmarks from Core i7, and the numbers are pretty sweet. Unless your computer dies and you HAVE to rebuild now, it's probably worth the wait...

It's like 300€ for the mobo and another 300€ for the cheapest version of the i7... And doesn't really do much for gaming...

Actually, the E8600 is 3 FPS faster in crysis then the i7 920
