My mobo only has x16 slots on it (4 of them =P) but I'm looking to install a new sound card and many good options are PCIe x1. Can I fit it without a dedicated x1 slot?

yes, pci-e x16 slots are designed to work w/ x1, x4, & x8 cards (if x4 & x8 cards even exist).

Yes, x4 and x8 cards exist :P

Speaking of x4 and x8...I'm having a bit of a predicament. I bought an x8 RAID card, but the only other PCIe slot that's not going to be filled is an x4 slot. Now, there's a mod to remove the terminating part of plastic on the x4 slot to allow any size card in there, and technically it should work. It's never been done before, so I'll be the first to try it (I think). Again, technically, there's no reason it shouldn't work (although, the bus speed will still be limited, although I can never hope to hit that limit anyway, so it doesn't matter).
