Every time I have tried to join the Valve Maps rotation for the past few days, TF2 will freeze up at the welcome screen. I cannot click "Continue" and I do not see the message of the day.

I haven't made any changes to my system, other than the Steam updates we all get.

Edit: I got it to load properly twice, and crash once today.

My specs:

Windows XP SP3
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Nvidia GeForce 9600GT
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS

It happens to me a lot. What I do is close all unnecessary apps then launch the game. Then I go to the server from there. I wait until it looks stable and then click continue. I have not tried changing my resolution but it sounds like a good idea. I will try it in a couple of days when I get off work. Hope this helps!

it may be easier to delete the maps from your maps folder, then just re download them.

I was thankfully able to play on the server for several hours last night, although it crashed for me a few times before I was finally able to connect.

I don't have any unnecessary apps running in the background, no security software, etc.

I'm assuming this doesn't happen on any other server?

I was disconnected from 2Fort regular, then unable to reconnect a few nights ago (it happened to Tattis, as well). It seems to mostly happen on this particular server though.

I already verified my GCF and had it replace my old TF2 folder.

After switching to windowed mode, I haven't had it completely freeze, it actually gives me an error when it crashes, and let's me close the program. The error I get is:

hl2.exe - Application Error

The exception Privileged instruction.
(0xc0000096) occurred in the application at location 0x00010102.

Click on OK to terminate the program.

I got this several times while trying to join CTF Well, and I was also disconnected from the server twice (after actually managing to connect) with the error "Disconnected: client timed out"

Ooh... I actually got that a few times. When I do, someone else does too, so I always thought it was the servers also, not my own computer.
I never bothered to look into it though honestly, since it would just happen once a while and I was still able to play after. I just would have to hit enter when I hear that error come up because alt-tabbing freezes.

Still trying to figure this out, but I have found that I also crash on Dustbowl and the Custom Maps rotation. I suspect the message of the day may have something to do with it, as it seems I can avoid the crash if I click Contonue before the MotD has a chance to load.

Have you updated everything? Make sure you're compy is clean of viruses and what not?
Maybe try running your computer in "Safe mode with Networking" (hit F12 when you boot up your computer when you see the developer's screen- like I would hit it when i see "DELL", this must be done before you see the window's black loading screen)
Otherwise use "msconfig" in Run to edit how the computer starts up that would maybe prevent some things from messing up your TF2.
That's all I can think of, otherwise do what I did, reformat.

I believe the MoTD gets displayed in an embedded version of Internet Explorer. If there's a whole bunch of stuff running (javascript or flash), it might cause enough of a slowdown on your comp that it effectively freezes.

2 things:
1. Try upgrading IE as much as you can. If you're already upgraded fully, maybe try the IE 8 beta?
2. Contact whoever's in charge of the message of the day pages and tell them that it breaks. You're not the only person to have problems with it--it even runs slow on my machine, which is pretty beastly.
