Is Skinning Considered Cheating?

I've seen some videos on Youtube of different skins for TF2 like the demoman's bottle being replaced with a pepsi bottle, the scout's bat saying Louisville Slugger on it and so on and I'm just wondering is this considered cheating? Like would I get in trouble for doing this or is it allowed in the game and in the servers? I'd love to re-skin my players but I don't want to run afoul of VAC or get labeled a hacker or something.
 
My copy of the game is so skinned up it's unbelievable. As long as it doesn't make the game easier it's fine.
 
Check the latest Monday Madness thread for a lot of shots I posted. I've got most every class with a different skin. No problems with using skins, as long as they're not specifically designed for cheating.
 
Most skins seem fine. I kinda draw the line this side of neon green plaid snipers with pink heads. Anything like that which gives you a strategic advantage is a no-no in my book.
 
Yeah, generally the big two problems with skins are ones that make people easier to spot or ones that make stickies easier to spot. (I've got the dynamite skin for my stickies; they're actually HARDER to see most the time.) This is just really one of those honor-system things; we all trust you enough to not exploit this just like we trust any pub not to. If you want to get some skins but want them to be entirely fair, most of the ones on FPSbanana are actually high-quality and entirely fair, save one or two that you'd really have to dig for. Quick note also: There are no skins that help you see disguised spies, there are no skins that help you see invisible spies.
 
I have American Flag Boxing Gloves from fpsbanana...as long as it doesn't give you an unfair advantage (besides, of course, the inspiring fervor of patriotism), its cool by me
 
I've got a nice black handled Axe, and that new awesome sniper skin. For the sniper gun, make sure any skin you use doesnt remove the black borders in-scope. Thats a BIG no-no.
 
I tried to explain that the removal of borders on the scope was cheating the other day. Someone tried to argue about it though. I think removal of the center of the crosshairs is cheating as well.

FPS banana does have a ton of awesome skins though :P

I think the rating system does a very good job keeping them on the up and up.

This was inadvertently part of a ban request/contest a few weeks ago.
 
Yeah, see this is why I ask these things, because the last thing I need is to be labeled a cheater. I rarely play Sniper so that's not really a concern for me, but still nice to know.
 
Theres a Pyro skin on FPSBanana by our very own Vote For Pedro that totally pwns face. You should try that :)
 
Skins, unless it changes the gameplay a little (like the aforementioned sniper scope thing), are okay. I have one for each class, including map related skins (I have Aperture vs. Black Mesa decals for the Blu and Red Team, respectively).
 
I use skins all the time. They're fine as long as they don't encroach on gameplay or give you an unfair edge.
