You're absolutely right!
They're called satellites. The Blackbird was an amazing piece of engineering but its costs were prohibitively expensive. Computer and photographic technology allowed for the same job to be done from space at far lower costs and risks to lives and equipment. Thus the retirement of the SR-71.

Ah, so why then do we still use the U-2??
Satellites in a geosynchronous orbit (it rotates fast enough so that it can watch the same spot of land at any point of time) aren't really whats used for military spotting. They mostly just use satellites that would pass over a much larger area frequently. If you wanted continuous observation of an area that is where a spy plane would come in handy. The global hawk does a good job at that.
