Sexual Harassment​

=(eGO)=? is a community, and being a community created by and for people gender issues are bound to arise. Our goal is to prevent such issues from occurring, or in the advent that they do occur to mediate them to a satisfactory conclusion for the afflicted party. An environment where both genders can coexist without friction is essential for any organization to grow and thrive.

Introduction​

=(eGO)=? considers itself honored and privileged to be the home of many female members. We wish to see their numbers increase, therefore we will spare nothing to ensure that they will be treated properly, with equality and due respect at all times and everywhere. The aim of this module is to educate our members on what constitutes sexual harassment, how to spot and prevent sexual harassment form occurring, and what to do in case it does happen. While the focus in this module is on women, since they are a minority in online gaming, this applies equally to men as well.

What is sexual harassment?​

There is a broad spectrum of behaviors that can qualify as sexual harassment. Often the behavior is intended to harass and the person doing it is well aware of that. But, it is also possible that the individual which engages in such behaviors does not mean it to be as such and is not aware the behavior is harassment.

There are some good indicators that one can look for in such instances to make a determination as to whether it is occurring or not. In most instances it will be clear whether sexual harassment is taking place or not.

• Sexual harassment is unwelcome attention of a sexual nature and is a form of illegal and social harassment. It includes a range of behavior from seemingly mild transgressions and annoyances to actual sexual abuse or sexual assault.
• Sexual harassment is considered a form of illegal discrimination in many countries, and is a form of abuse (sexual and psychological) and bullying.
• The victim does not have to be the person harassed but could be anyone affected by the offensive conduct.

How do you recognize harassment?

There many examples and it is not possible to list all of them, but two of the easiest ways to recognize sexual harassment in a gaming environment are:

Are you doing it just because she is a girl? If the answer is yes, stop.

• Do you follow her from server to server just because she is a girl?
• Do you follow her from room to room in vent just because she is a girl?
• Do you constantly ask her questions or talk only to her because she is a girl?

Would you say that to your sister? If the answer is no, don?t say it.

• Would you call your sister, babe or honey?
• Would you tell your sister she has a sexy voice?
• Would you send virtual roses or kisses to your sister over steam?

These examples may appear funny and gross, but that goes to show how stupid sexual harassment is. We are here to game and make friends, not date. Most of the women here are married or have boyfriends. The ones that do not are not here to get a boyfriend, they are here to simply play the games. Please, lets show our maturity and keep it that way. We are here to play games and make friends, not date. If you hear your friends or other guys do anything like this, please tell them to stop. No need to be shy or weird around our female players, or avoid them, just talk to them like we are your super fun gaming friends. It is as simple as that. Treat them with equality and respect.


To all =(eGO)=? female players:

Every man here has women in their lives that they would not allow to be treated like this and will not stand for you to be treated like this either. Any of the men will listen and take action. If for any reason, regardless what that reason is, you don?t feel comfortable telling one of the men about it, there are women in Leadership that you can talk to: PurpleNurple, NaaD, Paraplegic_Ballerina, k0nk0n, djsatanswife, alaskagirl. We can keep your name out of it if you?d prefer, but it is very important that we know about it.

The =(eG)=? mentioned earlier approached many of the girls and none of them knew about what he said to the others, so he was allowed to continue harassing one after another. Even one of our female Leaders was harassed and she did not say anything. She thought it was an isolated incident and told him to leave her alone, but he just moved on to the next girl. Speak out, everyone is against this and will take action against it. We need to make sure others know so this does not happen again.

Bottom line, if you are uncomfortable with something a guy says to you, don?t just deal with it, tell someone.

There is ZERO tolerance for Sexual Harassment.​

I will repeat that again. There is ZERO tolerance for Sexual Harassment. Those that are shown to engage in the harassment of others will be removed forthwith, without consideration or hesitation. There is ZERO tolerance for Sexual Harassment.​

Training Module: Verbal Harassment

These training modules provide information on Verbal Harassment and its types, and how to spot and deal with situation involving specific types of Verbal Harassment.

Introduction

Diversity in all traits of human beings makes for a healthy and successful organization. It is the intended goal of =(eGO)=? to create and maintain an environment free from all types of harassment.

The online world reduces interaction among people to verbal communication. Be it written or spoken communication, the evolution of verbal communication has allowed the internet to brim with social networks where individuals can participate in social groups almost to the level of physical, face to face interaction. While it is good that physical harassment will not occur, the downside is that verbal harassment will be much more frequent and prevalent. This in turn will cause some people to take that as a level of normalcy.

Some people will participate in verbal harassment without consideration, much like other social problems in the past and present such as racism and sexism. The goal in =(eGO)=? is to get beyond the ?If everyone does it then it is alright to do it as well? mentality and break that long standing cycle in online gaming. It is with this thought in mind that =(eGO)=? has adopted rules and guidelines concerning Verbal Harassment. Everyone is welcome =(eGO)=?, free from harassment of any kind. That is one of our main objectives as Server Administrators, and perhaps the most important.

Types of Verbal Harassment

There is no well defined separation between the different types of Verbal Harassments. Rather, this classification is meant only describe certain situations and establish indicators for which to look for in order to determine whether harassment is taking place. This works well in theory and facilitates training. However, actual verbal harassment will fall under more than one category.

These are the types of Verbal Harassment.

• Racism
  
  • Racism is defined as any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, color, descent, or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the social, cultural or any other field of public life.
  
  
• Sexual Harassment
  
  • Sexual harassment is unwelcome harassment of a sexual nature, or based upon the receiving party's sex or gender. It includes a range of behavior from seemingly mild transgressions and annoyances to actual sexual abuse or sexual assault. The victim does not have to be the person harassed but could be anyone affected by the offensive conduct.
  
  
• Language and Names
  
  • This type of harassment refers to words and names which are curses and are meant to insult or belittle another person in any way.
  
  
• Personal Harassment
  
  • Personal harassment is characterized by bullying, degrading, insulting through words addressed at a person, such as calling another person names, picking on another for certain things they do or say, age, voice, and in general things which are beyond the individuals control.
  
  
• Multiple and Miscellaneous Verbal Harassment
  
  • This refers to any type of verbal harassment that cannot be described or where certain actions fall under multiple categories of harassment.

Introduction​

This guide will inform forum users on how to properly use a forum to communicate. Today, we have two test subjects. Bob and Steve. Bob is new to a forum and is eager to post. Steve has had activity on multiple forums and takes time to read over its rules and regulations. Lets begin.

1. I. Spelling/Punctuation
   
   First, lets discuss using proper spelling and punctuation. Since you are communicating over the internet, a person can not directly speak to you. When you post on a forum, you want to display that you can communicate properly. Bob and Steve have written posts that introduce themselves to everyone on the forum, lets take a look.
   
   
   Thank you, Bob. Now Steve has also posted a introduction, lets take a look at his:
   
   
   Can you see the difference? Steve's post is clearly more intelligent. There is a time and place for Bob's dialog, its called texting. Bob should follow Steve's example.

2. II. Staying On Topic
   
   In the 'Off Topic Section', members are discussing their favorite color. Bob and Steve have found this thread, and have posted. Lets look at the posts.
   
   Bob sure has a way with words. Lets take a look at Steve's post.
   
   Steve stayed on topic while Bob did not. A thread is made to discuss a certain topic, not random ones.
   
   In the 'Misc Games' section, someone has posted a thread asking for opinions of PS3 games. Bob has made a post that the original poster may not be too happy about.
   
   Bob should really practice his communication skills.

3. III. Spamming
   
   Our test subjects have taken a trip to the 'Tech Help' section. Someone has posted a thread to hopefully get some help fixing his PC. It seems the user has gotten some nasty Viruses. Lets see how our duo reacts.
   
   
   Yes Bob, everyone hates getting a virus, but I think the original poster wanted help, not opinions.
   
   Oh? Steve has also made a post.
   
   
   Well look at Steve! He's a well rounded nice guy. Bob needs to get his act together.

4. IV. Using 'Smiles'
   
   Smiles are used to show an emotion. Notice how each smiley has an expression. Smiles can show emotion, but can also be overdone. A single post should not have over 5 smiles.
   
   Bob and Steve have found a thread on favorite foods. Lets see what they posted.
   
   Oh Bob, when will you learn?
   
   Steve is right on track. Bob on the other hand.... could use some guidance.

5. V. Leaving/Going Away Threads
   
   Bob and Steve are going on vacation. Steve knows our rules on leaving for an extended period of time, so he messages a Division Leader. But Bob wants attention. He decides to post a new thread in the General forum.
   
   Bob's thread is instantly locked. Steve's personal message to his Division Leader is noted and he can vacation in peace.

6. VI. Reporting Posts
   
   A new option has been enabled on the forum! You can now report posts to a forum admin. Bob and Steve take notice of this new option. Steve knows its to report bad posts, spam, and other malicious content. Bob may need a guide on how to use it though.
   
   A new thread has been made advertising fancy handbags at cheap prices! Steve eagerly reports the post. Steve also gives a reason on why he reported the post.
   
   Good work Steve! You just saved members from wasting money on fancy handbags. Oh? Bob has reported a post. The post deals with a member who lost his iPod on the bus. Bob writes:
   
   Bob, the report feature is to report content that hurts the being of the forum, such as spam, posts with offensive content, etc. Steve could give you some tips on when to use it.

7. VII. Taking Notes
   
   Bob has noticed how Steve's posts seem to draw more members to the threads he posts in. So he messages Steve for some helpful tips.
   
   He gives Bob some tips on proper spelling and punctuation, staying on topic, refraining from spamming, and restraint of smiles. Now Bob makes meaningful posts, and is a respected member of the forum he posts on. If you think you need a touch up on proper forum etiquette, maybe you should read this.[/center]

This module is a continuation of the Server Management Module. It goes deeper into server ranks and establishes terminology to better understand server behavior.

Terminology

Drop time. This is the time of day when the server drops bellow 20 players and keep dropping.

Up time. This is the time of day when the server begins to fill back up and reaches 20 players.

Dead time. This is a characteristic of the player population and depends on the location of the player population. If most players are from the US dead time is usually between 3:00 AM and 8:00 AM.

Player population. This is the population of the server. It includes the player which are aware of our server and have played at least once.

Game population. This is the total number of player which play DOD:S.

Drop rate. The rate at which players leave the server. For example, two players left in the last 10 minutes, then the rate is .2 per minute.

Join rate. Join rate. The rate at which players join the server. For examples two players join the server in the last 10 minutes, then the rate is .2 per minutes.

Server rate. This is the difference between the join rate and the drop rate. For example if in the last 10 minutes two player leave and two join the server rate is .2 - .2= 0. If 5 players join and two leave then the server rate is .5 - .2 = .3
