Caution, Sniper! What's your approach?
After a month and a half or so of playing Insurgency I really hand it to the developers of the game for doing their homework and choosing the right weapons for the job, specifically the ones used by the snipers. This realism of the game makes sniping more of a task then a convenience like in other games which in turn makes tracking and taking out an enemy sniper even more difficult. When confronting an enemy sniper whether you are an Insurgent or a Marine, the techniques you use to effectively neutralize the threat will determine if you win the battle or not.
Team Approach
One way of dealing with a persistent sniper problem is to use a precise and efficient approach which enables you to kill sniper with very little or no casualties, and that's through teamwork. Remember that the sniper usually targets the head and upper body for obvious reasons, so peeking out from a corner may be the last thing you'll do that round. So if you are on the Marines and have a well established communication between yourself and your teammates you should use that to your advantage, ask for the other troops in your unit to determine the exact location of the enemy sniper and when you have found where he has set up shop try to lay down some suppressing fire on his position and if you’re lucky he'll take one last peak through his scope. If the technique doesn’t kill or ruin the sniper's day let the majority of the troops proceed onto their objective and ask one or two to stay and continue with suppressive fire to distract or prevent the enemy sniper from moving to another position or to return fire. As they do you should try and make your way over to the last known position carefully and watch out for other Insurgents who might be in the same area as he is. When you find yourself within a short distance or when you have visual contact with the sniper charge his position and take him out, after doing this try to maintain the position to prevent other enemy snipers for setting up camp in the same spot, then proceed to your next objective. When it comes to the Insurgents against a Marine sniper, the team approach will also be relatively the same; however, more difficult do to the fact that most people who play on the Insurgents like to take a lone wolf approach to achieving the objective, so communication is key. Also the Marines usually play as a team even on a game, the typical idea of the United States Marines is power through team work and strength, therefore when you try to charge or fire on a Marine sniper's position be prepared to receive a high volume of return fire from his teammates who most likely are close by.
Explosive Approach
Another approach that would better fit the Insurgents is the utilization of explosives to either flush out the sniper or kill him. Obviously the range of high explosives offered in Insurgency include grenades, grenade launchers, and the well known RPG, if a sniper has set up shop on the side of a street a couple of nades precisely thrown near the position should kill or seriously wound the sniper. If the sniper is out of the reach of a tossed grenade the grenade launcher used by the Marines might be a better alternative and with a careful and quick look through the sights will probably put an end to the snipers rampage. As for a sniper in a window of a nearby building, the use of the grenade launcher or better yet the RPG will make for a quick end to your teams sniper issues. The explosion of the round in a contained area or room would make for certain death and if not i tell yah what, he won't be a very happy camper. I would also recommend the use of covering fire so that you can position your nade launcher or RPG in the right place to get a precise shot and a quick kill.
Sniper Vs. Sniper Approach
All of you seen movies that show a sniper track down and kill another sniper, or end up being killed himself. This is very true in modern times, but occurs less frequently due to how combat has changed; however, Insurgency has a lot to do with close urban combat with a lot of buildings and spaces to hide in just like in previous conflicts. Basically in order to take out an enemy sniper an aggressive style will get you killed, be patient and confident and take baby steps until you find him and shove a round right through his scope. When you’re in an open area crawling over a long period of time to find your target and get into position to take your shot is a good idea, it may take a long time, but you'll get your kill and the enemy sniper will be vigilante and think twice before going out for more.
Insurgency Sniper Platforms
Insurgents
The sniper rifle used by the Insurgents is called the Dragunov Rifle that uses a 7.62X54mm round which is basically a AK-47 round with a longer casing containing more gun powder, perfect for long range accuracy and for putting your target down for good. The rifle itself is scary, just the sound of the rifle being fired floods the Marines with fear and confusion. Another thing about the rifle is that it's designed to be rugged and easy to maintain, hints that the rifle is built using the same parts utilized by its AK-47 cousin. The rifle incorporates an easy to use scope mount and adjustment system for on demand tweaking, which enables even the least qualified person to use this formidable firearm to deadly effect.
Marines
As for the Marines, the sniper platform used in Insurgency is the all too familiar Springfield M1A Rifle, specifically the M25 Model. A proven weapon in many major conflicts and an extremely versatile semi automatic rifle and when coupled with a bipod and advanced optics, it makes for a terrifyingly effective and accurate weapon. The chamber holds the .308 WIN(Winchester) round, which is the same diameter bullet as the feared 7.62mm AK Series round, this round is a standard, proven, and must have for all snipers military or SWAT. The semi auto. feature of the weapon unlike other bolt action sniper rifles, enables this weapon to deliver a high volume of sniper fire down range towards the enemy and is more suited for urban combat.
