First off, is this rig going to be used for casual gaming? Or are you in college and are you replacing a whole desktop?

For casual gaming, I'd recommend http://techreport.com/articles.x/15731
It does run EXTREMELY hot though so be cautious about that.

The current laptop I own is an HP dv7 series. 17 inches diagonal across for viewing pleasures along with 8600M GS (best available for the model at the time)

You can certainly play around with the options and play around with it obviously.
The reason I recommend HP is because of the customer service. (My screen died with pixel errors and they replaced it for free, I didn't have to pay for any kind of shipping whatsoever)

Your options are even further open since you have much money to spend but do know that it is a laptop and upgrade is extremely unlikely and max I would ever spend is 1700 in total.

I haven't seen a laptop that offers the latest ATI graphics cards just yet (maybe I'm not looking hard enough). But that would be my choice if I saw it.

I was thinking about getting the alienware Area-51 m15x Laptop or the XPS.

The down side of it is that i heard that dell and alienware are bad or something. Is this true?

Its really good, but im not sure they make em anymore.

Try another xps laptop, i can vouch for xps comps.

I have a Velocity Micro desktop, if their notebooks are as great as my PC has been I wouldnt hesitate to buy one.

is your choosing between dell or alienware. don't think twice about, alienware is the way to go. faster, more powerful, cooler, more reliable and a much cooler look to top it off. (and a mousepad and shirt that i am the proud owner of)

Alienware was bought/merged with Dell.

Does anyone know if this has affected Alienware's quality/customer service? Are they now just Dell under a different name?

If your dont want a Dell or Alienware. You can always check out HP and customize the computer for yourself. Just looked and a Core 2 Duo @ 2.8gb, 4gb of ram a 512mb video card and a 1T hard drive would run you at $2400.

In the case of Laptops, no.
Dells and such are only bad because as pre-builts, they are almost impossible to upgrade.

Laptops are generally unupgradable, due to they're unstandardized parts and small size, so Alienware is fine.

oh ho! sweet - i've always dreamed of owning alienware (desktop though) - all i could afford was this P.O.S. dell. thankfully i bought the monitor separately - a 2ms Samsung - its grrrrrr-reat! (look at the response time - if its above 10ms IMHO its not for gaming)

Which is why they are good for companies to get consistency across your network makes troubleshooting when applying patches a lot easier when you have similar systems.

My roommate has the XPS 1530 and loves it. I would go with alienware if you can spend the money other wise i don't think you'll be disappointed with an XPS.

Dell Inspiron 1520! It cost me $1800 and that was with a $600 discount. It has a GeForce 8600GT video card (better than GS). Its amazing! 2.2 Ghz Core 2 duo, 160GB HDD, 3 GB ram(upgraded), external monitor 22 inch Samsung LCD.
