First, is it really worth it? Does anyone here have an overclocked processor, if so, how great is it really. I've heard it can really help you PC, although the risk is rather high. I was hoping someone could give me some advice or walk me through it. I have already done some research and it doesn't seem terribly hard, I would just like some more opinions on the topic.

Overclocking is definitely worth it if you're careful and don't push too hard. Make sure you read up thoroughly beforehand, and use no more voltage than absolutely necessary (and for the love of god, don't leave your voltage settings at "auto"). Too much voltage drastically reduces the lifetime of any CPU.

I have an E2160, which ran at 1.8GHz stock, and OCed it to 3.0GHz. This is with the craptacular intel cooler it came with. That's a massive increase in speed, and very noticeable. Best of all, it was totally free. You won't get as high an overclock from your chip, but the Bartons were good OCing chips in their day. You might be able to hit 2.3, or even 2.4GHz if you're lucky.

Also, make sure your RAM can handle it - try to run your RAM:FSB ratio 1:1. This will require overclocking your RAM. You could use a divider if needed to run your RAM slower than your FSB, but this will hurt performance compared to 1:1.

I would not overclock your CPU, RAM, GPU or anything.

I used www.extremeoverclocking.com to overclock my E8400 from 3.0 GHZ to 4.2 GHZ

But I don't think that your computer could overclock very much with that processor, ram and graphics card.

I suggest you buy a new computer.

There's really no harm in overclocking if you're careful. Why shouldn't he at least try it? Assuming he doesn't do anything foolish, the worst case scenario is he doesn't see a performance gain. If he achieves a stable overclock, though, he'll get a completely free performance boost.
 
Well, overclocking the CPU can be tricky if you want the most out of your overclock. Keep in mind that when you overclock, the FSB needs to be overclocked and your RAM may not like that. Also, you will have to up the voltage on your CPU(that is the most dangerous part). You also might have to decrease or increase your multiplier so that your overclock is stable. Above all, make sure you have a really good heatsink/fan on your CPU. I recommend the Zalman 9700 and arctic silver thermal paste(you can find these on NEWEGG, just follow the link in the eGO Mall). I overclock every piece of hardware I can not because I need to but I just like doing it for some reason. Also, you might want to test out your overclock with some programs made for stressing the cpu and ram. Let me know if you need a list.
 
The only harm that comes from overclocking a cpu or gpu is heat. If you can monitor your tempetures closely you can see how far you can push it. Its not recommended unless your an advanced user dealing with hardware and troubleshooting. Also ya you need a new comp man, sdram is sooooo 7 years ago :)
 
Pretty old comp. But meh it is like mine so... :P

I just look at the overclocked comps they sell at UberClok.
 
Your setup, would allow very little OCing, its extremely out dated.

Surprisingly enough, there have been some extremely overclockable chips from ages ago. The Celeron 300A was one of the greatest OCing chips ever - people would routinely take them from 300MHz right up to 500.
 
if you dont see a big performance boost from the OC, dont be foolish and keep pushing it until you do. chances are you'll burn you cpu, gpu, etc.
 
I have an AMD Athlon as well, except a tad newer. Whenever I overclock it at all, I constantly get random freezes. My experiences haven't been that great.
