ATI vs Vista VPU timeout issue

I have been having issues for a long time now with ATI video drivers. I thought and hoped that ATI would fix it but after some research ATI might not be the problem.

The problem is easly described and a supposed fix is here too.

Now, my questions is this. When i open my Reg. editor the key that Microsoft says is supposed to be there is NOT there. (TdrDelay: REG_DWORD) I manually added it and set the values accordingly.

Was this the correct way to do this?

Actually, I have had this problem in the past with my intel laptop drivers. It seemed to be a mix of updating both the chipset drivers and also upgrading to the latest drivers of the video card. After that, it didnt seem to crash again like yours did/is.

BTW i did not see that key either in mine. There is a timeout string in my DCI folder though with a value of 7

Well, If I did this correctly then I set this to 8 seconds as described in the thread above. It hasn't crashed yet so i hope this is the fix, and I hope I edited the registry correctly.

Yeah Harmless, what you did is correct as long as you made the right type key and set the values correctly.

If you still get the errors download the program below and save to desktop.

Boot into safe mode and run the tool to delete ALL ATI drivers and reboot.

When rebooted don't freak out if the icons are huge your computer is running in VGA mode. Go ahead and install the latest ATI drivers and reboot again.


I've had a few problems with ATI, and this has taken care of the problem most of the time. It wouldn't hurt to try anyways.

UPDATE

Changing the reg. key does work but its not the fix. All it did was delay the VPU recover time, which apparently still isnt enough time for it to recover.

The thing that bugs me is it doesnt happen under any type of load, its usually after im done playing a game and looking at the forums. BAM, freeze, black screen followed by the blue crash screen -_-!

This was happening with my 2600HD and now my new 4850!

I tried Rabid Ewoks fix, so hope that works. The one that was orginally for DL on the link you gave is 9.99. I used the one they had for free. :/

I know this was along time ago but i had an ATIx300 and for what ever reason it didnt like the CCC. Thats why they give you the option to download the display driver only. I think if this doesnt work im going to uninstall the CCC and run the driver alone, see if that works.

any other ideas fellas?

Rabid's point about removing, scrubbing, and then reinstalling is a good one. Hopefully, that fixes the problem for you. If not, here are some other ideas:

1. Are there any files or errors written when your PC crashes? What is the specific BSOD error?

2. Have you checked your voltages and temps? One program to do is HWMonitor. Does your RAM and video card have what they need?

3. What does Event Viewer say? Does it record anything in App or System logs?

4. What does Performance Monitor say? I'm specifically interested in the Reliability (Monitor) report. Setting a monitor on the memory (I can't remember if you can do just video memory) might be useful.

5. Have you tested your RAM? Two common tests are Memtest and Microsoft's.

6. Have you installed Service Pack 1?

7. Have you installed the Vista update for graphics issues (Sep 08)?

8. If you have installed the update, have you considered/tried removing it?

9. Do you have matched memory sticks?

Last, I would definitely not use CCC. I don't, not because I am trying to avoid crashing, but to just minimize the processes and memory in use.
