Desktop slowing down

I have an HP desktop that is about 1 year old now. Its ok, other than the fact that it was kinda the guinea pig for some of the new stuff they started putting in their computers ( like vista SP1 ) its got some neat stuff in it I just got the early versions. Anyway its starting to lag on me a bit. It used to play the games I bought for it perfectly, but over time its gotten less responsive. I used to be able to put the game that is the hardest on it (World in conflict) on the highest settings and it would run fine. Now medium-high settings lag.

Can anyone give me some tips to maybe bring it back a bit?

p.s. I dont think its a virus, I am a very safe sufer, especially on this computer. (though it may just be Norton itself being a source hog.)
 
Yeah my computer's getting slower too, i doubt its a virus though and it isnt much slower, just not as fast as it once was. It just makes a lot of noise now before it was silent. I bought it in feburary and it was working very well when it was new. I havent opened it once since I got it
 
What do you mean "slow down"? What specifically is slowing down? What are the overall specs for your PC?

For example World in Conflict (I love that game!? Want a match?), if high-res is slowing you down, it might be your computer swapping out things more than it used to before. That could be from a badly defragged hard drive to failing memory.

So, try these things:

1. Download and use CCleaner.
2. Check your disk for errors. (Scandisk or chkdsk - whatever, same thing).
3. Defrag.
4. Ensure your drivers are up-to-date. As you download and patch Vista, its interaction with the subcomponents may change. Keep the component drivers patched too.
5. And as people suggest, ensure your PC is clean and relatively dust-free. Check your fans and intakes/outlets. Ifyour PC is getting dusty, it may be starting to overheat.
 
There is a limit on how much a tool can clean up a computer. I usually re-install Windows every year and use a nice defrag tool often.
 
Its an HP d4995t, I forget what the CPU is exactly but it runs about 2.39GHz. Ive got 3GB RAM in it. Bout 200GB of HDD space left. Everything else is pretty stock. I probably do need to clean it for one. How is the best way to do that without damage? Im also thinking about putting in a new HDD.
 
windows just naturally slows down, unless you run hardcore maintenance. Things that will help speed windows up with out formatting, is to check your start up programs, i recommend having only your virus scan on start up. Besides that just routine scans spybot and registry scanners in safe mode, see if that helps. If not everytime a vista machine formats, a pyro dies some where in tf :)
