I learned a lot of what I may say here the hard way and, well, wisdom is no good if you don't share it. Anything you guys see to improve upon or disagree with, post and do so. My scores are still break-even or with my deaths doubling my kills so I know I am not a god at this game :) Just figure that I may have learned a few things someone else my not have.

1: Guns have kickback:
I watch some people play and spray wildly when they get into a fight, only to then wonder how they missed. Remember, your crosshair widens as you move or shoot, showing the area where your bullets can go. So even if you aim on someones head, the bullet may go a little left, or right, or down, or above. Rifles are more accurate than a fully automatic. If you have a fully automatic gun, or even semi automatic shoot in bursts. This give your aim time to steady and also allow you, the player, to readjust your aim.

2: Bullets can go through walls:
Don't think you are safe just because you are behind a wall. I have killed a few people with the heavy MG just by spraying the wall they ducked behind. Walls do reduce damage buy a bit (I think..) but a bit of lead in the head is still lethal, even through concrete or plaster.

3: Be aware of your surroundings:
I have died many times while sniping or camping with the heavy MG simply because I did not think to look around and so someone walked up and knifed me.
If you are sniping, pause every once in awhile to take stock of where you are, this is very important if no one is covering your back. If someone is protecting you, know there name! If they die, you know to switch to your pistol and get ready, or even call for help. Even if you die, you can alert your team before you drop and they can take down the person before he causes more damage.

4:Communicate:
I notice a team does better when they all act like scouts. This is something I do all the time. Even if I can't shoot a guy or he runs by an area where I did not have more than a second to see him, I always update my team and they usually kill the person with little trouble. This is why we named different buildings and areas. 'Enemy going into sniper house' will let anyone inside know they are in danger. 'Enemy in tank house' lets people know if it is safe to cap the tank flag and where some people are.
It may be excessive but the eGo server I play is always on Donner and when I use the MG, I pick an area and stays there until I die. If I pick back alley, I will say 'If I die, enemies are in back alley' or 'If I die, enemies are in the field'. Thus, when I do die, they know where I was and where some enemies are and may be coming from.
If I find myself bored or I think I am camping too far back, I will let my team know I am moving positions. A team can't work together without teamwork.

5:Don't get discouraged/Angry!:
I will find myself sometimes getting really angry when I thought I killed someone, and did not. Or when I undeploy the heavy MG, and THEN someone comes around the corner.
My biggest gripe, by far, is that the bullet seems to come out of the gun AFTER the firing animation. I can't count the number of times my gun went *BA-* and I dropped dead, doing nothing to the guy shooting me. When I get angry, I stop doing as well, die more, and get MORE angry. Then the game stops being fun.
And it's always ment to be fun. Forget your score, forget your rank, or how many headshots you have. If you are not going to play to have fun, you should not play. If you start getting angry, log off for a bit and do something else.

Remember: It's ment to be fun and you will get better with practice. So hop on one of our servers, load up your gun, Soldier, and fight like you only have one respawn to give for your country! Dismissed!

Good points, from now on I'll start shooting at walls :)

Harhar. I have gotten a few people who try to slllooowwly edge out and then dart back and stop. If you know where a person is, some of the walls might as well not be there. :)

Drop ammo for Machine gunners and rocketeers.
Machine gunners and snipers, keep up with the action. If your team owns three or four flags, don't camp at the first flag.
Machine Gunners, Snipers and rocketeers, consider using secondary weapons when on the move.
Crouching and prone (lying down) lowers recoil. Prone characters are vulnerable to knife and shovel attacks. The fastest way out of prone is jump.
If caught reloading, try switching weapons, pistol or blade are good for close in and don't take too long to set up.

Also remember to download all the custom skins that give you the maximum benefit over those who do not. There is a sticky that allows M1 or K98 zoom that doesn't cover half of the screen! Go to www.fpsbanana.com and get these to get the MAXIMUM benefit over other players!

- K98 / M1: Get the one that is on our forum sticky. You will be actually using their zoom in function.
- Player Skins: Get a combination of the Army Men, and Soccer Shirt skins. Army Men's German team is pure green and Soccer Shirt for Americans are BRIGHT red.
- Sniper Scopes: Get the one that says Bulls Eye. It gets rid of ALL the black that the snipe scope covers when zoomed in. Plus there is a bright red dot in middle to help you snipe.

Remember, that these are ALL LEGAL in EGO servers. I have been told numerous times that you can use these. You probably can find even better combination that gives you even more benefit and get massive numbers of kills. It is possible to make your own skins if you know Photoshop. But please do NOT make any walls transparent using Alpha Channel, I know it is super easy for anyone with Photoshop knowledge but it is not LEGAL here. There is ABSOLUTELY no chance that you will get caught using customized skin that you have made, but please do NOT use them.

Well I don't know about you, but I prefer to have a realistic look on the game then a little advantage on the clothes and weapons. That way I know that I'm the one doing the killing and not some add-on that I use.

Another advice, BE AGGRESSIVE! I've lost the count as to how many time I've killed around 10 enemies at the beginning of the round just by doing things different. I'm not gona tell you how exactly I do this because I want you to come with your own way of playing, but it work every time for me. And don't worry if you get killed, there's always a respawn waiting for you.

true advice for new players: start off with rifles. if you're new to fps and dods, the rifles are the easiest to learn. everything else has compromises: spray, no xhair when moving, etc.
don't focus too much on kills, or on stats - objectives are the point of the game, and if you push for them you have a lot more fun and the teamwork factor gets a lot bigger, which is what it's actually about. being "good" is a combination of being aggressive and defensive, going for objectives, and some camping...

most importantly, keep it fun and play often - that's the only way to really get better.

Very nice Akisohida. I was looking for "tutorials" like this when I first started.

Maybe we should make this a sticky???

Hehe. If people want it a sticky, I bet they have to rate the thread first. I could be wrong.. A sticky thread on tips for newbies (this one or another one) would be useful so it is always up-top where new people can see it.

RUSH< KILL<DIE<RESPWAN<REPEAT

thats alll you need to know lol. Really though rushing works alot IF you have teamwork. Also ALWAYS give me the sniper =-D.

Rushing ONLY works well if you have teamwork. You need to know what the others are doing since all rushing really does is give people too many targets to shoot at. Many people die, a few survive and try to kill those who are stopping the rush.

Caveat to #1 - I tend to spray with weapons like the Thompson and MP44, while using generous amounts of strafe and crouch. Generally, I find that this will allow me to kill my opponent easily. The mileage of this method may vary, but I find it works pretty well for me.

Finally, if you play assault...USE YOUR SMOKE. I can't TELL you how many times a well placed smoke grenade has allowed me to ruin the day of a MG or Sniper. I know that when I play MG, if I get a smoke popped on/near me, I get the heck out of dodge.

Eh, I'd rather play a good looking game that is fair than one that looks weird and gives me an advantage... :/

Hearhear. If I could, I'd delete from his post the addy. No offense to him but in my mind, ANY modification that gives you an advantage over other players is a hack.
If you make players stand out in shadows; hack. After all, hiding in the shadows is a good way to stay alive while hunting for a target.
Getting rid of the black in a scope so you can see around you; hack. I mean, loosing the ability to see your surroundings is something you should cope with as a sniper. Unscope every once in awhile and look around or have someone watching your back.

Not all hacks have to give you the ability to see through walls or automatically hit heads. Those are just the more common ones used by people who take the game so seriously that they HAVE TO WIN. It's a sad mindset, really.

Being sneaky is a good way to get a tonne of points.. Strafe-crouch through the shadows and then ghenk people in the back when they come near you :) You will die alot more, but you will always gain points because a knife kill = 3x multiplier while most guns are 1.5x.

This is really easy to do on maps like Flash, Donner and Avalanche. And it also is really fun, because after you melee someone you can gloat over chat :)

Also i have found that if you have thrown a grenade at a player and have not killed him and you are assault. Sometimes throwing your smoke grenade very well at them will scare them out of their spot, giving you a chance to rush in and take them out before they can re-set up.You know the grenade is not going to kill you and they think it will. Its the perfect distraction.

Great advise, & here's some more great advise hop on any server & have fun!!!
Rank is way over rated!

Good point... I do that a lot. Gotta be careful with smoke though, make sure it doesn't get in the way of your team's progress. Actually, you always have to be careful with smoke... think it through before you throw it. What is the purpose of the smoke screen? Where are you trying to get? Whose view are you trying to block? Where's the best place to throw it? Are you gonna blind your own MGs/snipers?

Smoke is extremely effective against snipers and MGs. Always try to get it as far into the enemy territory as possible. AND NEVER SMOKE YOUR SPAWN. lol :D

i usually play sniper so first off some tips for snipers...
1.) it usually only takes one or two deaths before you figure out if the sniper/mg's on the other team have faster reflexes than you. try camping spots you know theyre going to pop out, or sprinting out and then scoping instead of slowly coming around the corner
2.) make sure you have a good grasp on where your teammates have covered. nothing makes you lose points in a hurry like not knowing where the enemy is in wheelhouse or sewers...i dropped almost five hundred yesterday :(

for teammates!:
i would say by now there are a fair amount of skilled snipers/mgs playing on ego servers. controlling the side paths would help them control the main point of attack

riflemen: don't stand around and wait for your crosshair to minimize in order to shoot someone, it actually only takes like a tenth of a second. try practicing strafing and stopping only for a second to shoot. if you can do it with a garand youll be really good
