Steam Server Setup

I'm really confused on how to set up my own steam server where I can get a couple people to play on. I've downloaded HLDS and gotten the dedicated server for Counter-Strike: Source (The only game I could find a decent tutorial for) but people still are only seeing it has a LAN server and also can't get in. I'm so confused about opening ports because when I try to create a static IP, my internet starts to not work...I'm so confused! I've already contacted my ISP for the DNS servers I need to set one up, but I'm still at a loss. I've looked all over this forum and I'm not sure there's anything about port forwarding and all that. Does anyone understand what I'm sayin'? I hope so >.<! Any and all help would be appreciated! Thank you :]

Well "ipconfig/all" from the dos prompt will tell you your dns servers and IP but, if you are behind a home firewall your IP may be internal to your network. If you are using a broadband modem and can log into your router you should be able to get its external IP, also it may need to be configured to forward certain ports in to your pc.

For others to be able to play on the server, you have to use the command sv_lan 0. Do not have them connect through the Steam friends list, that will not give the correct IP address.

Well, if you do have a dynamic IP, then you could make it static...
Wireless Network Connection Status > Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Enter all your info from ipconfig/all, except with a set IP address, then you're done. Your IP won't change anymore.

First I'd check to see if your router supports some kind of static IP thing. I use DynDNS.org with my Netgear. That way I don't have to run a program on your PC to update it. But if your router doesn't support something like that, you can always run something on your computer, as Cap'n Christ pointed out

Oh man! I totally forgot to input sv_lan 0! I'll try that! Thanks for all the help :] I'll be back to say whether it worked or not!
