In an effort to recognize the contributions made by everyone who sacrifices for their country, whether in the armed forces or other worthy professions, we have renamed the Military Service award to the National Service ribbon. The following is the official description:

"Awarded in recognition of this member's service to his or her country in the armed forces, firefighting or law enforcement. May also be awarded for other types of service not mentioned here, to be determined on a case by case basis."

USCG HAMMER handles this award. If you feel you deserve it, please contact him via PM.

So essentially it recognizes whether their profession puts their personal security on the line, in the service of the community they serve.
 
would singing to old people and giving them food count?
 
thats extremely nice of you guys to do that for our men and women that serve to make this country better.... Almost everyone in my family has served this county and i am going to be glad to as well:D
 
I don't really agree with the change. This award should be kept as is and only be awarded to those who are currently serving, or have served his/her's country's armed forces. If you want to recognize law enforcement, firefighters, doctors, nurses, emt's etc make a new award call the community service award or something. Just my 2 cents. And by the way i have the utmost respect for all the above.

If they were to start categorizing non-game-related awards like that, where do you draw the line? There are thousands of professions that require plenty of dedication and sacrifice to help uphold everyone's standard of living.

In my personal opinion, I don't think political/military issues have any place at all in a gaming community, but if they are going to award people for dedication and service to their respective country, it's only right that they broaden it to include other professions.
 
So far I have had a large number of you PM me requesting the award. Please keep them coming.

I would like to clarify something though. This award is for Active or Retired Military, US or Abroad. Any member of US or Abroad Law Enforcement. Any member of US or Abroad Fire Fighting depts. Members who in a civilian aspect work for the Federal Govt.

When you PM me, please give a description of your service. "I need this award" or "i've earned this award" is not going to work. You dont have to tell the entire story, but be somewhat descriptive for me.

I agree 100% with crash this is a good change. The heros in our community should not be short changed.

My first thought was along the lines of what B-man said. Give us vets our own award and create a different award for Civil Service. But then I read Crashman's post and it got me thinking about sharing MY award with nurses and firefighters. I happen to be an Army combat veteran, should I have to share my award with those who enjoyed peacetime and/or stateside service? I got shot at for this award; don't I deserve it more? But what about the Marine vet I work with now who lost most of his hearing and a couple of his squadmates when they had to take on an Iraqi tank with nothing but a couple of hand grenades. Doesn't he deserve it even more than me? I'm also thinking back to my college days when I did some substitute teaching to pay the bills. I'm not sure what took more courage, clearing some bunkers near Umm Qsar or walking into that classroom my first day.

I'd say you take on any profession where you knowingly place your life at risk for the betterment of the community and not just your wallet, you get this award. Military, Police, Firefighters, sure; Border Patrol, Prison Guard, them too; I'd say any kind of Law Enforcement. I'd think real hard about EMT, Paramedic, Nurses, and Teachers too. But I'm just some clown who likes to ramble on forums, so what do I know?;)
 
Question.

What about if you had compete internationally in world contest for your county in some sport? Can this be awarded or maybe such award was not created yet? It is not military but in some way a person was representing a nation internationally.

Maybe i should send a pm and ask someone ?
