Have to agree with the others, AVG saved a few comps. from being wiped and reloaded. (And its free.)

The extreme vast majority of malware found on computers in today's world is not actually a virus. Usually it is some form of Trojan/Spyware. I understand you dont really care, but the best way to go about this is using AVG as mentioned above, with another form of malware removal tool. I recommend you use the following two:

SuperAntiSpyware (I know, sounds corny, but it works wonders!)
www.superantispyware.com - Free!

MalwareBytes (Another geeky name, but one of the best freewares I've seen!)
www.malwarebytes.org - Free!

Again, use these in conjunction with AVG. Your problem should be gone in a matter of 1-2 hours worth of effort instead of 3-5 hours rebuilding Windows and applications.

experience should count - thats why (i had a couple infections with honest to goodness viruses - viri) - ill tell you this. AVG is free thats why people like it. on the other hand it does exactly didly-squat when it comes to detection and it sloooooooows the pc down to a crawl. NOD32 smart security is the best detector on the market to date (over 90% effective vs AVG's about 50%) and takes up very little pc resourses. firewall is the best and detection cant be beat. NOT free and when scanning/finding something it will most likely clear it and not treat. obvously without vital parts windows cannot function. now listen - and this is important - the best detector/treamment antivirus is DrWeb's CureIt (and its FREE) http://www.freedrweb.com/ this guy will scan everything and TREAT it! its detector is on par with NOD32 and its cleaning abilities absolutely cannot be beat. if you try it you absolutely will not be dissapointed. (when launching DrWeb - let it do quick scan, then when finished, press complete scan and it'll run for a couple of hours.)
i became DrWeb's strong advocate when it detected and cured two viruses i had (not at the same time) a while ago. what makes it even more appealing is that it detects all sorts of malware (jokes, redirectors, viruses, trojans, popups, loggers, email viruses, whatever!) and is updated several times a day.
thank you for letting me rant
