Favourite movie soundtrack?

Sometimes we forget how important music is to movies. Music is as important as the footage itself, it provides mood and atmosphere. What is your favourite movie soundtrack? I'm not allowing or including musicals since they rely on music more than any other genre, and while I love musicals, I want to point out non-musical films since those are the ones we sometimes don't pay attention to as much. For me, it would easily be the soundtrack to Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) which is one of the most gorgeous modern classical compositions in recent film, or really ever. Considering the soundtracks to most Japanese movies at the time or even now, this soundtrack was a breath of fresh air. Considering the state of 'modern' classical, this soundtrack was a breath of fresh air. It actually has the beautiful melody of the original classical that made it classic (Modern classical is a bunch of instruments banging tunelessly, imho) and it was quite a treat once when a local group performed the entire Mononoke Hime suite.

Other mentions would be Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Koukaku Kidoutai (Ghost in the Shell) series. Star Wars and Indiana Jones both have beautiful and epic scores by John Williams, the LoTR series has an amazing score by Howard Shore (Who in all honesty wasn't that great at first, if you've heard his early work.) and the Koukaku Kidoutai series has a very haunting and fitting soundtrack, the introductions chanted in ancient Japanese are eerie and yet pretty at the same time.

Samples of what I'm talking about:

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn_95hdy6Nw[/ame] The Imperial March from Star Wars (I'm sure everyone knows this one, but it's a live rendition and its actually a pretty good one.)

I'm sure everyone knows the LoTR theme, and I can't seem to find any other track from its soundtrack on YouTube :(

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_1PssU1a9U[/ame] That eerie-Ancient Japanese intro from Innocence (Ghost in the Shell 2. I do like the original one better, though both are pretty close, I chose to link to this one though since the intro video to the first film contained nudity. I do prefer this sequel over the rest of the first movie though, I personally hated it :( but loved the sequel. Flame on Anime fans.)

It's true that most movies aren't anything without their musical scores to add an atmosphere and emotion. Most music in movies is overlooked and its sad. I really enjoy the jazz theme's in Hellsing, the one in the opening of of each episode. Another jazz theme that i like is in the Cowboy Bop series. Best musical scores i have heard are from the Warcraft series video games, a little of topic, but i really enjoy the classical theme. Each song is like an Epic poem.

My favorite soundtrack is In the house/in a heartbeat - John Murphy (28 days later soundtrack)

The best in my mind is LOTR.

Other excellent themes are Star Wars, Band of Brothers and allways moving God Father's "Love story"

Saving Private Ryan: Hymn to the Fallen

Lord of the Rings: Concerning Hobbits

I like LOTR but it's a little too soft/quiet sometimes.
Pirates of the Caribbean. It'll keep you awake :D
The Last Samurai.
Saving Private Ryan

Batman the Dark Knight

Pirates of the Carribean

The LOTR one is also great (but already posted above)

Really, these are just a small few of my favourites, I've got dozens of favourite movie soundtracks.

Recent song i've been listening obsessively to: John Murphy - Surface of the Sun

Im going to have to go with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the soundtrack is just so good! It also is more entertaining for me to listen to than most other soundtracks without the movie. Although Pirates of the Carribean has had great music too.

Edit: Oh and if musicals count Chicago has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard.

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, LotR, Band of Brothers, and Pirates of the Caribbean all come to mind. I might also add the theme to Harry Potter, which is another great John Williams score.
