if i do the unrestrict command so i can raise my view distance n stuff past the recommended settings it gives me, will this cause harm to my actually hardware? (nothings overclocked) or will the game just lag harmlessly?

No, it will just run at a lower frame rate It's still bearable, too. I tried it on an 8800GTS 640mb SSC and it ran just fine.
