High Pingers are giving me the Lag!
This is blatantly untrue. High ping players joining a server may give a momentary ping spike, but once they are on the server, as annoying as it may be to see them warping about or running into walls, their ping does not impact directly on your ping in any significant way. The server allocates a maximum capped amount of bandwidth to each individual so again a player with a higher ping cannot draw more bandwidth than anyone else. The server doesn't slow down to provide data at a slower rate for dial uppers for example. If you look at your Ping and see that it is relatively low (i.e. below 200ms) then any lag you experience is because of graphical slowdown. If you're experiencing warping, that's packet loss and due to the server. If your ping is extremely high, and/or those of other players suddenly become quite high, then you may have a valid point in saying the server is laggy. However once again, this is not due to high ping individuals, since they cannot force a server to lag out. Note that virtually any time large numbers of people join/leave a server you will experience brief moments of ping spikes.

This seems to be a very common misconception... in fact I was under the impression along with a lot of others that someone logging into the server with high ping was affecting everyone else on the server. Good to know this isn't the case.

thanks for the tips. normaly im a low-mid range ping (50-180) but, recently i have been hit hard with lag. i hope these tip help alot

Thanks for the information! I actually didn't know about the high pingers don't contribute to my lag, and I know that many other people don't know about this common misconception either so this is very nice information, people do need to see this.

i do believe the command is
"God 1"
unfortunately, sv_cheats is set to "0" in our servers unless there's something wrong. nice try though :)

no the correct command is "Form of Wewo" not really but it feels good to say so;)

sooo cl_updaterate affects how many packets your client is requesting from the server. No matter how high you set this, the max our servers allows is 66 since that's it's tickrate. You should have this value set to no higher than your average FPS (Frames per second), so if you're getting more than 66fps it should make sense that you'd want your cl_updaterate set to exactly as much as the server is willing to send you, which is 66. I use that, and, well, it seems to work. I'd recommend trying that out and only lower it if you're finding that you're getting choke.

EDIT: also, lower your rate and cmd/updaterate if your ping is; the higher those values the higher your ping.
