So I open iTunes today and it says there is another update available and so I decide to install it. However, I have not updated since 7.4.1.2 because I didn't want to bother with it at the time. Fast forward like a year and now it's up to 8.2 or something. While it is installing, an error comes up and says that it isn't allowed to be installed there and tells me to find a folder containing iTunes.msi so it can be installed. After doing that, it still won't work.

Am I just screwed and have to uninstall it and reinstall? And if so, what will happen to my music?

I would uninstall and reinstall. Your music should be fine. You could copy all your music to a folder on your desktop first. Then reinstall and copy it all back. Just my guess.

Any thoughts EGO?

thanks. Just export it all to a folder? Here goes nothing...

I would just cut everything from the itunes folder in your "my music" folder (in windows) and paste it somewhere else.

Then uninstall itunes, and download the newest version from teh EEEEVIL site and move the itunes folder back into your "my music"

Yeah, reinstall it. Specifically you'll want to go under the Add/Remove programs, and remove Apple Software Update, iTunes, and Quicktime. Only reboot after removing all three (Windows will likely prompt after iTunes). Then go on the website (www.itunes.com redirects to the download page) and redownload the 8.0.2 installer.

Your music and playlists should not be touched. They're typically stored in a separate folder, and Windows does not usually remove the actual iTunes folder itself when uninstalling.

scratch that. it won't even let me uninstall it. here's what popped up, which is also what pops up when I try to install the update.

Odd. Well, I can't say I've come across that one before. Try redownloading the install of the site and run that, and select the repair option. If that doesn't do it, I'd give the AppleCare line a call (18002752273). Aim for the iPod or iPhone department, they both have the most support for iTunes.
