Ah, internet working, but steam games are not.

I would really like to bump this, as it's been four months since I've played a steam game and have long since passed through the withdrawal period.

Did not ignore your post. Like I said, whenever I tried to click that link, it just gave me a fatal error, closing steam.

Steam tech support was terribly unhelpful, linking me to a page where I had tried everything. Re-opened the question, they have yet to get back to me even with a "Damned if we knew"
 
I think we you get a error message just click on the window and hit control c and paste what it copied here so we can look at the error message.

It helps to be detailed as possible and more information wouldn't hurt because things are still vague.

Also delete Steam.log and try to run steam again then copy the whole log if possible and put it here in the code tags <-- that way we have nice scroll bars and not a huge page.

Alright, open the following directories,
C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\<yourusername>\Team Fortress 2
C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\<yourusername>\Counter Strike Source
C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\<yourusername>\Insurgency

And delete the HL2.exe.

You may also want to clean the registry as blue stealth said.

If this doesn't work, preform a full virus scan with your system, as it could be corrupted.

Finally, if this doesn't work then its time to back up your files and reinstall windows.

if anything just uninstall completly and reinstall and that should clear the problem if not try ur firewall. if not try to add it into your allowed program section of your antivirus cause it could read it as a threat as nortan and mcafee sometimes does.

Tried both of those, nothing.
 
Sorry, haven't reformatted. Want to save that as a last ditch thing, cause I need this computer for other stuff >_>
 
Well, seeing as you've tried everything else.. I think you are left with two options.

1. Bite the Bullet and Format, Reinstall Windows.
2. Go without Steam until you are man enough to format.

It's a shame it may come to that. 60% of the time, Valve/Steam fails all the time.
 
You may even find your computer runs like new without all the junk that collects over the years.

Unless anyone else has any suggestions about what to do I think you might need to reformat.
 
Dont format yet...can you explain your problem a bit more? Can you open steam, just not open a game, correct?
 
Okay open steam, right click one of the games, go to properties, local files tab, Delete Ingame content, and verify your cache. Then try the game tell me what happens this is just a normal procedure. Do you still have the games with you etc... perhaps uninstall and reinstall the games...this is what i had to get TF2 to work, reinstalled 3 times.

Already tried.
I've even deleted and reinstalled ALL of steam, and then re-downloaded my games (I downloaded it from Steam)

Nothing.
 
Tough problem. very tough. whatever is happening is happening in between Steam and hl2.exe somewhere. try this; add a non-steam game, then try to run it by launching through steam. then try a steam game that doesn't run through hl2.exe. see if those work okay.

also, make sure the permissions for hl2.exe are standard, try setting it to run as administrator if necessary.

if you can remember, did anything happen to your computer in between the last time you could play and the first time you couldn't play?

EDIT: A thought. any drivers you may have recently updated, try rolling them back. particularly video drivers. or if any of your drivers are out of date, update them.

Tried going back to old previous drivers, did nothing.
Didn't modify my computer in anyway since the last time I played, at least, not that I can remember.

I'm going to try to change the permissions for hl2.exe, as soon as I finish what they suggested on Support.

Hello Stephen,

Please try the following:

Exit Steam.

Browse to your Steam installation (Usually C:\Program Files\Steam\)

Rename the "steamapps" folder to "old_steamapps"

Re-launch Steam and attempt to re-download the game.

Once the download is complete, test the issue.

If the issue is not resolved, you may rename the folder back to avoid having to re-download other games.
