Turn a demo recording into a movie file to watch/upload to youtube?

There is a specific way to record other than the demo format Source engine uses. I don't recall the commands but I am sure you can find it on FPS banana. If I remember correctly you first save it as a demo then the source program in game converts it. There may be a 3rd party converter out there. I tried using a program like FRAPs to record the demo as i was view it in avi format but it wouldnt record it right. It was laggy and glitchy.

Ok midget heres something i do, its something good and it reduces the amount of lag as Clarko said. I use fraps for my stuff when im recording. So do this. Go to the console and type "record (name)" to record what you want, then type "stop" after you have recorded what you want. Then after you have played you have to leave the server and go to the console again and type in "play (name)" This will play your demo. Then you can use fraps to record this. My way reduces the amount of lag when you are playing + You can do loads of cool stuff.

My tip, record straight after in fraps, because when valve does updates, you cant watch your demo.

Record the demo you want.

Disconnect from the server


Go to options and select windowed mode.

open the console and type sv_cheats 1

then type host_framerate 30

(cl_drawhud 0 removed the HUD if you want.)


Now type in startmovie moviename avi (the moviename can be whatever you want it to be)

It might freeze for a second or two then a little menu will pop up. Scroll down to xvid codec and select it.

In the console type playdemo demoname.

When you are done recording type stopmovie or endmovie in the console.

(note: you Can play the demo first, and get to the point you wish to record THEN type startmovie moviename avi to start recording from there.)

You must type endmovie in the console when you are done recording for this to work. Now, when you are done open your tf2 folder where demo's are stored and there should be an avi file there.

Otherwise your video will be several gigabytes, or it will look really terrible.

EDIT: When you start to actually record, the demo will seem extremely laggy. This is normal, so don't worry about it. It may appear very laggy but once you end the movie and view the actual .avi file, it plays at a very high framerate and does not lag due to the host_framerate command.
