XP or Vista?

I've been using Vista 64 bit for almost 6 months now and I don't have a bad thing to say about it.

I've had zero driver problems and no lockups or crashes. All my games play amazingly well, and I can fully utilize the 4gb of RAM I have. Honestly I really really enjoy the OS.

I don't understand what the people saying wait for Win7 mean by that. Besides the taskbar and a few GUI enhancements, can you tell me what they REMOVED from Vista that makes it so much better, from an operational standpoint?

Q6600, 680i, 4gb Gskill Ram, SLI 8800gt.

Yeah, After people started saying Vista sucks i started to wonder, But no XP i just dislike, I don't like the XP task bar and i'm ready to Switch over to vista so

I'm going with Vista Home Pre 32bit too hope all go's as planed.
 
I have vista, but I have been using 64 bit as well and I don't have any problems.

The only problem I have, is a weird one. I have wireless on my desktop, yes wireless. Sometimes, when my wireless signal changes or disconnects, my computer freezes. This is usually when the router IS NOT near my computer. It's usually in a study room in my house which is far from my room.I get 2 or 3 bars out of 5. Here's the thing, the times I have it in my actual room and have full signal, I have no problems whatsoever. Also, there are other times the signal switches off or changes and I just loose connection for a few seconds and it comes back, without any freezing. Any thoughts?

P.S: In my opinion, I'd downgrade to XP or wait until Windows 7 comes out.
 
I didn't read the whole thread, so sorry if someone has posted what I'm about to say, but you've made reference to having two hard drives somewhere, so why not try dual booting with XP and Windows 7 Beta? See what you think. Someone else said to keep with XP until 7 is fully ready to go, I'd second that.. Vista is garbage imo.
 
Vista is definitly for games. XP has ease of using. It has taken me 3 months and I still do not know quite how it works. There are pros and cons for XP and Vista.

Vista: Good for games, and for sleek style
Bad for just about everything else.

XP: Good for everything that Vista is bad at.
 
win7 beta (not that buggy at all)

ubuntu (use wine for games) its what i use on my laptop and works better than you would expect. plus the obvious benifits over windows

i vote no vista for your specs
 
when i had swtiched my xp to vista all my games had lagged like crazy i dont recommand it although ive heard good things about vista ultimate.
 
Everyone rags on Vista... but I don't think those who do have really used it apart from on a friends computer or something. As tiddy said (and we all know tiddy is no liar), there are very few problems on Vista anymore. I suffered from just 1 problem, and that is that my mobo isn't fully compatible with Vista, but that just means I can't update a ethernet driver, no biggie. So far, I've been using it for 2 years solid now with absolutely no trouble.

Ah, and Vista has been patched well enough, there was a post in our forum just a few weeks back that showed benchmarks of XP SP3 vs. Vista SP1 and there was very little difference in framerate and load time of games (like .1 - 2), but of course this is with both computers having proper specs for the games.

As for 32 vs 64, if you want 64 bit Vista is a sure bet. XP 64 is a slopjob with tons of driver trouble, but Vista's 64 has a better WoW (Windows on Windows) so there aren't any problems with compatibility. If you plan to upgrade your RAM soon, and it's so cheap that you may as well, the 64 is a good choice. You may question if you'll use a full 4 or 8 gigs, but anyone who enjoys multitasking or even just convenience of not having to reload programs will make use of at least part of the RAM.

PS: I've used only Ultimate, I can't speak for the other sub-versions of Vista.
 
Yea I was going to throw out the linux curve ball but slusserjon beat me to it. I play many of my favorite games on kubuntu linux, including DODs. Back in the day counter strike ran at a better frame rate under linux, DODs runs fine so I'm sure all of valve would be fine. Cedega has Left 4 Dead on its list...

While talking to an agent at iBuyPower, i asked the same thing. If i should stay with windows XP or Upgrade to Vista 64 Bit. He told me that if I were going to get Vista, it really would not make a difference if I bought 32 or 64. I currently own 2 computers, 1 with Vista and 1 with XP. I like the XP one better since the Vista version I bought was the first one, and was very buggy. I still recomend a newer Vista version. Good luck with everything!

if you have a crappy comp.. XP

if you have a good comp... vista.

i must say.. i love vista.. my laptop runs vista. and i couldn't be happier with it.. but i wouldn't dare put vista on my desktop. cause my desktop is OLD.. it wouldn't run right..
so basicly.. if your comp is 2007 or newer.. vista would run fine.. anything older wouldn't be good
 
Go Vista DX10, and 64-bit, i have a laptop with vista and i run all games without any problem all the crap you hear about vista is not true. Much better than XP, cleaner desktop, 10 times more features. My first computer build later in the spring or early summer, im going with 64-bit Vista for sure.
 
Go for vista get 64 bit if you want to fully utilize 4 gigs of ram. If your not going to upgrade your ram then i would get 32bit. Ive had it for over a year and have been pretty much problem free. I havent had any driver issues or programs that dont work. The rumors of xp being better are not true anymore with all the updates vista is just as good at gaming as xp plus you get dx10. My games run very well on my pc and its a mid ranged rig.

If i were you i wouldnt waste my money upgrading the os. I would much rather put that cash towards a better video card. Itll make a big difference in games.

p.s. im using vista home premium 64 bit.
 
Vista fans, I'm sorry but you guys are all wrong about Vista "performing" better. I have both Vista and XP on my PC and let me tell you that XP has better frame rates than Vista. I know its sad but its a true story, sorry.

And let me say this again, unless you have 64-Bit games then go for a 64-bit OS because if not then just stick with a 32-Bit OS. You aren't going to get better performance if not all your programs are 64-Bit. Also, Vista 32-Bit supports 4GB of memory.
 
I've been running Vista 64 Ultimate for about a year now and haven't had any problems. If you're going with 4GB of RAM or more, I'd go Vista64, if you've got less than 4GB, just use XP. That's the main reason I went Vista64.

Spooky you are right and wrong. 32bit will support 4gigs of ram. but it will only detect 4gigs of ram - the amount of ram on your videocard. So you can have 4 gigs in there but it will utilize 3.5gigs or so depending on you videocard.

You do realize the framerate difference is most likely caused by directx10 in vista. Of course your gonna get slower framerates with higher video settings.

the pro to a 64bit os is not the fact that the programs are made for 64bit os. Its that you can have much more ram in your computer that way.
