I agree with frap, wait for Windows 7. Just make sure you get the 64-bit version so you can use more than 4 GB of ram.

Whens the release date for 7 and whats the cost? Im looking at computer hardware now, but wont be able to buy until I can get a new job. Cuz $7 an hour and maybe 20 hrs a week doesnt cut it for a former college student with loans.

I dont know about the release date or any info on it but if i were you i wouldnt even worry about it until games stop supporting xp and are made completely in dx10 or higher.
xp will do everything you need it to. as i stated before a videocard upgrade would be far better than upgrading your os. You can get a very solid videocard for less than it would cost to get vista. 9600gt's are very good as are the radeon 3k and 4k series and those are all around $100 or less.

Im averaging 90+FPS with what I have at 1680x1050 with all settings high and Trilinear filtering, so thats not bothering me.
Correct me if I am wrong. You are correct if the computer has an "integrated" graphics card but if it has a "dedicated" graphics card it doesn't need to be read by the OS because well, it doesn't have to be.
Well after doing quite some research I have come with a conclusion that games that support directx 9 (CS:Source for example), regardless of what OS you are using, the frame rates XP is still better.
So either way my OP was still correct.

I also did research between Windows XP Pro SP3 and Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 and my RAM utilization and FPS were 13% higher than XP SP3. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/xp-vs-vista,1531-11.html

The problem with waiting for Windows7 is that it has the same basic requirements as Vista.
If your computer can't run Vista, then it won't like Windows7 either.
That said, I like Vista more than XP. There is nothing like running Aero with transparency while getting more FPS than my friend's computer... on my laptop.

Thats a different thing. That is actually using your ram as vram. The os will detect it and will reduce the total amount of ram. Research it. here is the page from microsoft that proves you need 64bit os to fully utilize 4gb of ram. Thats the easiest way to explain it because i looked this up earlier to back up what i already knew.

meh.. I guess I was a little outdated on the Vista part but I was close. Now lets pat ourselves in the back.
Still I like my bare XP (aka XP "Gaming Edition") for gaming, maybe because I haven't tried ripping Vista apart yet. hmmmm..

no offense, but since ive heard so many say that 7 is what vista needed, then id say that im willin 2 wait til a 64 bit version of 7 comes out (or another version that will detect all of my memory) not to mention that it will actually run a dual-core cpu (which im sure it will run a dual-core cpu just fine).
