Hey there! I haven't done a First Impressions article in awhile (I usually saved them for Betas, and I've been out of the loop on betas for awhile) but I felt the need to do a new one.

This time I'm going to be taking a look at the demo for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

FEAR (No dots, too lazy) was one of my top games of 2005. I was able to get past the repetitive locales, the fact that most of the enemies were the same, and enjoy the kick a** combat, cool graphics, interesting story (Well, I liked it even though others didn't seem to dig it all that much) and I was hotly awaiting what was in store for Project Origin since it was first announced. (Plus I'm glad to see that Monolith got the FEAR name back so that we wouldn't have a crappy third party FEAR 2 out there as well.) As soon as I saw the Demo was on steam, I quickly began downloading it. As soon as it was done, I launched it and played it through.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

In other words: AWESOME.

First things first, the engine. A pet peeve of mine with modern engines (I'm looking at you, CryEngine 2, you poorly coded hunk of crap hiding behind your prettiness.) is that the designers will toss in tons of good graphics but forget to iron out bugs and make the game compatible on older computers. While FEAR 2 may not look as good as oh say, FarCry 2, it still looks really nice and is on par with, if not better than, games like Dead Space or Fallout 3. Not only that, the engine has few bugs and it runs buttery smooth at 1680 x 1050 with all the antialiasing and antistropic filtering maxed out, and this is on a 4 year old computer that barely runs source games over 20 frames a second. With everything maxed out I get a nice 45 fps on average. The texture work is excellent, and once again I'm going to single out a certain texture and praise it: The blood. While obviously there are more important textures and such, I've always loved the blood textures in FEAR because they look more brutal and they look more splattery and nasty than most blood decals, especially the ones in say games like Half-Life 2 (Which I replaced its blood decals with the ones from FEAR :D) that look weird, grainy, pixellated, or tiny.

Now onto the game. If you liked FEAR, FEAR 2 is pretty much a copy of it with a few fancy new tricks, so that means FEAR 2 will be up your ally. If you didn't like the original, then I doubt #2 is going to change your mind. The game still has excellent AI and sound direction, and it continues on what made FEAR a seemingly "universal" horror game. What I mean by that is not only does it have gory, slasher/B-Horror movie type scares for the squeamish or morbid, it also has the occasional f*** with your head low key psychological horror, so whether you like your horror over the top or subtle there's a little bit of both. I won't say the game is particularly "scary" but it provides a unique and compelling atmosphere. I happen to like both extremely gory horror for the funniness of it and psychological horror because its a bit more affecting, so while both may be watered down before mixing together they work for me and I like it for that. The gameplay is fast paced, frentic, and still challenging. As I said before, it's not going to change your opinion of the game if you didn't like the original, but if you liked the original, than so far it looks like FEAR 2 is a worthy addition and is easily the first must play of 2009 for shooter fans.

If only I had 50 bucks, then I'd totally be preordering this :(

Oh well, whenever I get my hands on some money (Harharhar, that's not going to happen until the year 2059) this is definitely going to be a must buy for me and hopefully I'll see you guys in the games online component, assuming the online is as fun as it was with the original game.

Thanks for taking the time to review it and post it here. Ill be sure to check this one out!

I was initially unimpressed, but when that ghost followed me I was scared outta my skin :D

It's a bit cartoony - blood is bright red

And the dialog is really BORINGGGG :\

A well written impression.

I didn't much care for the demo. I'm not entirely sure why though, the game play is smooth and enjoyable. I love the first F.E.A.R and have been looking forward to its true sequel for a while now.

It almost seems like the action doesn't have the right pacing to it. It feels like I'm being rushed from one area to the next and not allowed to fully appreciate the game as a whole.

Despite of what I said above, I'm still going to buy the game. Since the Max Payne series ended there really isn't any Slow-mo action games out there.( yeah, I dont care about Stranglehold)

Give it some credit as it's still just a demo and they'll probably make some last minute tweaks, if not updating it from time to time. Overall I say it's a promising game.

I played it for a few minutes and it didnt seem bad, although I usually dont particularly like the whole scare the crap out of you games.

I found the graphics decent, and even though the system requirements seemed quite high, I was able to run the game with all graphics settings up to max and 4xAA (probably coulda pushed it higher).

I always like to compare my games to HL2 in terms of the way they control, because I think source has the best feeling controls of any game I have ever played. This one, while pretty good just did not quite measure up. Just had a slightly odd feeling to the controls (If i am making any sense at all). But overall it wasnt bad... I have played worse.

I probably wont be buying it, but thats just me.... never cared for the first game, and this one seems like more of the same (may be a good thing or a bad thing for others)

it was immense. i dnt need to do any cardiovascular work for a while now

i keept using Hl2 controls, pressing ctrl to crouch instead of c

the graphics seem, odd i hope you get what i mean by that, not bad just not like i holly expected, sort of gritty(that may be because of my graphics card i dnt know) still loved it might get not sure yet.

Ice hearted killer... i dont mean the actual control scheme.... just the way it feels overall to control in game.

I loved the new demo, but I also say the graphics are familiar. To the new Killzone coming to the PS3. Things I liked about the demo:
1: Graphics (Of course)
2:The voice work (Very good in my opinion)
3:The Scares, the ghost had me with scares and when you first walked in to meet the ghost, with the school sounds. And where Alma (Evil little thing) pops out when you get close to walking out the theater.

The game feels rushed, as it is (What I heard) different levels smashed together. So, you do not actually get to know any of the new story from the demo. Except that some survived the explosion, at the end of the first Fear.

Oh, ya forgot to add I pre ordered it from Gamestop. Comes with the special pre order stuff. WOOT!

I never get tired talking to you. Your vocabulary is so extensive and you seem incredibly intellectual.

I know how you could make money to buy the game.
You should be a writer on some magazine

I just finished the demo... Makes Left 4 Dead look like Hello Kitty. (Not that Hello Kitty is bad or anything.)

Well L4D isnt even scary.. not even close. And as for the demo i was a bit dissappointed in the "scare" factor.. i wasnt even really shocked and i walked right through the demo in about 8 minutes...

Gameplay : 7.5
Scare: 4
Action: 8.5
Graphics: 8.5

eh I never played the first fear becasue I didnt like the idea behind it. I tried the demo and was pretty freaked out till I saw the first ghosts, and then when I saw the women that seems to be killing everyone left and right, I was rather unimpressed. I did like some of the fire fights, and knocking things over for cover, but in the end I wanted to buy the game of the Fear factor, and I just wasnt impressed by the demo.

My computer is teriblay laggy on that game, unless the first part is supposed to be in really bad slow motion when i move my mouse it takes 1.5 secondss to read it

I got the demo from Xbox Live, pretty scary. Last scary game i've ever played was silent hill 1. The worst part of the game was the sewer part where the radio thingy was just buzzing all over the place. Back to topic, after going through the school, i got to a path that leads to what looks like a sewer, i turned my xbox off afterwards.

This game gave me a bit of the chills, looks real smoothe, i personally think the texture on the buildings could have a little work
