Sudden Death on Warpath and Keeping the Server Full

I'd like Warpath to:

  • Change Sudden Death to Melee

    Points: 53 52.0%
  • Increase the Time Limit to 1 hour

    Points: 12 11.8%
  • Take off Time Limits

    Points: 29 28.4%
  • Do Nothing

    Points: 8 7.8%

I never play warpath. I would if it had the melee only sudden death where it automatically switches everybody to one random class.

I will also vouch for no-normal-sudden death, I enjoy warpath a lot but I couldnt help but notice how sudden death happens quite frequently also
Scout does sound good because of the speed and.. bats are awesome
If everyone was heavy though (someone mentioned heavies), it would not be fair because some people have KGBs, also they'e slower :P
random or all same sounds good though
The time limit does seem to push people to actively play though, and seems people are upset with its turtling bore... so I'd say extend time limit lil bit for those that don't like too short of a game but not go so far as to make it unlimited. 2fort may work well w/unlimited but it feels like it'll never stop and I just get tired and leave ;)

First off, sorry I haven't been on the Warpath server much lately. If I was there probably wouldn't be such a problem with stalemates since I'd just pwn everyone and tear through people (tee hee, that's a joke). Long story short, I've been too busy lately and even when I do get on to steam sometimes I don't even get time to start a game up. Then when I do get in game I seem to get called away from it right away. Grrr.

Back to the issue at hand. Melee sudden death with everyone switching to the same random class is what I'd prefer. Even just random class switch where everyone is something different would be fine too. Adding more time would just add more turtling as others have stated and not fix the problem. Going random melee makes it kind of fun and I think it makes the end of a round more cheery rather than "Everyone don't die, play smart" yada yada stuff.

Somewhat related, I think another reason for the server emptying out like it does has to do with some players that only team up with their clan mates and seem to be on the server all the time. It's really not fun to call for a medic when you're on a sliver of health only to watch a guy from one clan sitting there over healing his clan mate instead of trying to play a team game.

I'm all for melee sudden death. Or maybe some type of random class (non-melee) sudden death. But I'm absolutely not in favor of increasing time limits. In fact, fact I'd argue long time limits is actually a problem on Warpath (and on a map such as Dustbowl).

Having a map change and restart gives a chance for the teams to really reshuffle. I think what causes people to leave a server is feeling like "nothing is ever going to change." So longer map times actually help contribute to the feeling like the endless war in "1984" - "We're fighting over point 2, we've *always* been fighting over point 2. And we're always going to continue fighting over point 2...."

I'd say map times should be shortened considerably. Say... 15 minutes. Each time you cap a point, add... 5 minutes. So, on a typical last point defense, assuming no cap point flip-flops, that means the map would last 25 minutes (pt 3 and 4 adding 5 minutes each). So the map won't last longer than 25 minutes until Sudden Death.

I definitely think the round time should be increased not by like 500 minutes but by 15 or so minutes. Caps add 5 minutes.

One other suggestion to me is if a team A does not touch the next point within a certain time, say 5 minutes, then team A players starting spawning back by one spawn point. This would make it easier for team B to push out. After all, that is one of the primary issues on Warpath....some players don't really care about the win. Some are in it for the fun, some are in it for the stats, and some are in it to win it! I think this approach cuts down on Team A having Team B pinned at B's first for 25 minutes of stat building, camping bore-fest game play.

The sudden death matches do cause players to leave the server, if for no other reason than it gives them a breaking point to go hit the bathroom, eat, smoke, etc. Forget that! That's why Plork wears Depends! Hours of fun with no breaks. Get with the program! Depends for all! Potential new sponsor?

The juggling part of SD is bad also. Capping points should add time or else, it was said before, the other players run to CP1 spawn and hide. Yuck! Staying in spawn longer then 15 seconds should cause the player to catch on fire or something.

I love this map. It just needs a little TLC and it will be perfect.

Could not agree more. Warpath has SO much potential but there are a few kinks we gotta work out and this is one of them. Looks like people are leaning towards the Melee SD. My vote would be to test it and see what people think.

I have to disagree with you on this azz. Any extension in Warpath time will only contribute to longer waits for stalemates to begin. I'd say the most common complaint right now with Warpath is games that last forever in one position. Merely extending the time will do little to resolve this.

Moreover, extending the time will really only mean that I'll be dominating you for an extra 15 minutes or so. And do you really want that?

Same problem will be the case for scout Very Soon. Only it will be worse, because only a select few people will actually have the melee unlockable.

Might make more of a case for completely random Melee. I haven't been on a random melee server but it sounds hilarious. Maybe we even turn the HLStatsX off during sudden death.

Testing it sounds good! Really just experience of what it's like when the game is longer/shorter or diff styles of sudden death would help rather than just thinkin it with words at the moment- after reading all these posts I just don't know anymore haha
I hope the council will allow few weeks for warpath to just go through diff styles and then have a final vote at the end?

My one suggestion would be to have the respawn time vary by which points you control. If your down to controlling your last point you shouldn't have the luxury of having a fast respawn time with really no distance to travel at all to get back and help your team. The team that is in the lead has such a long walk back to the battle after a respawn that it makes defense much easier, which leads to the turtling.
My idea would be adjusting respawn times according to what points you control. The further back your pushed, the longer you have to wait to respawn. That way it sort of balances the distance that winning team has to run to get back into the battle.

i personally hated melee with everyone one class in sd. completely random is better, but i enjoy the way it is now.

If you add the time plus add the other part I suggested it would be awesome. The team has motivation to move forward or else.

Dominating me? Lately, I have been banging out a big 10-15 fps so I don't think it's too tough. Especially, when you hide way in back sniping from your LaZBoy. whoopdee-doo

Soooo 77 votes later it looks like people want Melee back. However, I think we need to take into account the coming Scout updated. Would people hate something like a demo melee only?

Changing the sudden death to a melee seems fine to me. It settles the match quickly. Removing all time limits or making them extremely long can lead to very long deadlocks, I've participated in many, and it gets very boring. Doing nothing will cause it to slip. Making the time limit an hour is a second good option.
