better/best anti-virus

AVG free, despite me running a nightly scan, completely failed and let a crap load of malware onto my machine to the point of forcing me to reformat. I'm not happy. What's the best free anti-virus/spyware software besides AVG?
 
I would buy NOD ESET 32, I have it and LOVE it!

Its not free, but its worth it. There arent many free ones out there, besides McAfee, which is not that good.
 
Well Norton is a complete fail. It actually slowed my computer and allowed viruses to get on. So don't get Norton.

One that actually worked for me was Spy Sweeper (TF2 lol). And no, there are no pyros. It doesn't pick up viruses, but it sure as heck picks up Spyware. It doesn't slow your computer too :D
 
Well, one of the best free anti-viruses is AVG, so you're kinda out of luck.

Try malwarebytes anti malware for the spyware, and for antivirus try Avast! free.
 
I'm not too inclined to pay for software that will still be evaded by the really clever viruses, but I'll give some of these a shot once I unscrew my machine. Thanks.
 
AVG is CRAP. I ran into the same problem as you using AVG. I'm using Avira at the moment with Ad-aware/Spybot combo and I haven't had any issues in a year or more. Good luck.
 
Avast! has not failed me yet. I download and upload and other little things and still havnt gotten a virus. I also know alot of "hackers" and each one suggest using it. It has an active scanner that takes up little resources and catches bad sites, unsafe downloads and other things of the sort.
 
Using avast and malware, spyware combo.... all 3 dont slow my computer down at all when running but when all 3 are running at the same time its noticeably slow but not to the point where I cant play any game
 
I really don't get what you guys do to your computers.
I've been using AVG for years, and will for years to come.
It has never, ever failed me.

I used Anti-Vir before AVG, and the only reason I switched was because AVG is far more light weight.
 
Best advise, only games no "surfing" uh speical sites lol

I have only my vista firewall and bitdefender for 9 months now never had a reason to reinstall yet, partily because I limit my computer use to edgegamers and trusted known websites and games :)
 
avg free edition is only for antispyware and virus's only and does not detect everything. something you should try is malwarebytes along with your avg to get the best free protection.

hey master, if you did have to pay for anti-virus (just curious), then whats the least amount that your willin 2 pay? please dont say like a penny or somethin really lame like that. i want an honest answer.
 
I've have Avira on mine for like a month now And it finds stuff and i love it also it free it finds things that AVG wishs it could find.

main word here is FREE. Avg is best FREE antivirus.

In terms of anti-spyware i would do these

Avast!
superantispyware
spybot search and destroy
