better/best anti-virus

I really don't get what you guys do to your computers.
I've been using AVG for years, and will for years to come.
It has never, ever failed me.

I used Anti-Vir before AVG, and the only reason I switched was because AVG is far more light weight.

i dont do all these but most people do liemwire, torrents, clicking on ads, and TOOLBARS, yes toolbard usually contain malware or at least tracking cookies.

Kaspersky has the best detection rates, but is the slowest.

Nod32 has one one of the greatest heuristic scanners out there and is very fast. But sometimes has false positives.

Well Norton is a complete fail. It actually slowed my computer and allowed viruses to get on. So don't get Norton.

One that actually worked for me was Spy Sweeper (TF2 lol). And no, there are no pyros. It doesn't pick up viruses, but it sure as heck picks up Spyware. It doesn't slow your computer too :D

I have use both Spysweeper, and Norton lol

I use the Norton 2009, works great for me:D

Also, these virus protections can't always automatically get rid of the problem, some times you have to do a little manual fixing for the more complicated viruses

My bad on the double post, was an accident:(.

Kaspersky I would take over Nod32 if your going to pay for one. Nod32 is great but those False positive get so annoying... Grrrrrr I need to go pick up Kaspersky for my desktop..... Sick of Nod32

I think you people are all getting off-track as the original request was for FREE anti-virus software.

Anti-Vir is free, will not slow your system down and will also pick up most viruses that come through instantly

Norton Internet security 2009 was rebuilt from the ground up and is way better than past versions imo.

If you want a free program I wouldn't go with Avast! I've heard some BAD stories about it not doing it's job, and even one instance where upon downloading it a trojan came with it.

If you want to pay I would suggest going with McAfee 2008 or 2009, these two versions are about equal IMO. I've been using McAfee for years and it has always done very well. I used to never recommend Norton as it seems to be just awful, though I have heard recently that it's really improved.

If you don't mind paying for your antivirus, the two best of the best in the market are Panda and NOD32, i have the NOD SmartSuite, which is antivirus+antispyware, and it has never ever failed me, it's the best out there at catching viruses which haven't been analysed yet, it's got the best heuristics engine, so I'd go for that. Panda hogs up too many PC resources imo, so i'd prefer NOD anyday!

I have NOD32. It's amazing. Best A/V out, in my opinion. I mean seriously, the government uses it, who uses Norton? Schools? Ha!
