Just out of curiousity, I was checking my stats one HLStatsX. I noticed in the Miscellaneous Statistics that it gave my current rank. Where/how does this rank get generated, & what exactly does it mean?

I'm not sure if I should be trying to improve my rank for some reason, or is it just a general rank that means nothing in gameplay.

It means absolutely nothing to gameplay, it is for your own amusement if you wish to keep track of it.

Rank is determined by the number of points you have.

In a nutshell, points are assigned as follows:

Kills are the main source of points for most players.

Killing someone with a weak weapon will get you more points, as will killing someone who has more points than you.

You get points for other things, such as capping a point, assists, buildings built, double kills, etc.

When you die, you lose as many points as the other person gained.
