If you live in America and snagged a pair of those Blue-Yellow glasses for use during the Superbowl, don't throw them away!

That is... IF you have a recent NVIDIA card. If you use ATI, throw 'em away.

NVIDIA has True 3D drivers that handle Anaglyph glasses. It takes minutes and one reboot to install, and you can play your games in real 3D.

PROS: The games looks awesome, and especially TF2... just cool to actually see the Cart in 3D, to see they Pryo wave his flamethrower in your face. It's great.

CONS: Requires a bit of registry work (nothing dangerous!). A bit of ghosting.

REGISTRY NOTE: Don't come crying to me if you break your computer. I did exactly what I typed below, and the glasses worked with no ill effects. But make a backup, and be careful. Neither I nor EDGEGAMERS, or anyone here is responsible for your registry!

THE INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Download the LATEST NVIDIA driver for your card, here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

2) Download the 3D extension to the drivers, here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d_stereo.html#drivers

3) Install the NVIDIA driver. Reboot.

4) Install the GeForce 3D driver. Optional reboot (I did it for luck.)

NOTE: Now, the registry fun! Because the glasses are "Ochre/Blue", you've gotta hack the registry to change the colors the driver uses. They USED to have this as an option in the dialog box... D:

7a) Open your start menu and...
(XP) click Run and type in the box...
(Vista) type in the search box...
... regedit

7b) The registry contains all your windows settings, so be careful! For luck backup the registry by going to File -> Export and make sure "All" is selected under "Export range."

7c) Go through the tree until you find this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D

(Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, click SOFTWARE, etc. etc. etc.)

7d) In the right hand side, look for "StereoVisionConfirmed". Double click, and change to "1" (the driver has a bug and simply won't run unless you "confirm"... but the confirm program crashes. So sidestep that.

7e) Now, look for "RightAnaglyphFilter". Double click and change to "1fff600" After a bit of tweaking, I found this value to work pretty well with Blueish lens. It's not the best; if you find a better color, let me know.

7f) Now, look for "LeftAnaglyphFilter". Double click and change to "ffffff00". This works pretty well for the Yellow lens. Not perfect; again, if you find a better color, let me know.

8) Close regedit.

9) Run your game.

10) The 3D effects ONLY happen when you are running in fullscreen mode.

A green message in the corner tells you your 3D settings. Simply hit Ctrl + Alt + Insert to make them go away.

Control + T turns the effects on and off.

Control + F4 and +F3 fiddle with the 3D depth. Find a setting that works for you!

WHIZBANG! 3D effects, for free! Now, I'm still tweaking with the colors; if you find better colors for the driver filters let me know. And the paper glasses are pretty uncomfortable... once I lick the ghosting, I might buy real filters for my glasses.

It's not as good as the real 3D shutter glasses NVIDIA sells, but this you can do with the monitor you have with free glasses you can get from the supermarket!

It takes a few days, and it's Red/Cyan... so DON'T do instructions 7e and 7f! The default settings are for Red/Cyan, but the color resolution isn't as good as with Yellow/Blue.

Strangely enough, unlike Red/Blue glasses, the Yellow/Purpleblue glasses don't distort the image so much... the games ARE playable without the glasses.

They were giving away the glasses at grocery stores in the cola aisle. Look for a big Pepsi display. They might still have it up since NBC is showing Chuck in 3D tonight.
 
The glasses are standard "ColorCode" glasses. You can buy those online for $1-2.

Or, you can send a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope to the address on this page:

And ask for the RED-BLUE glasses. Or RED-CYAN.

RED-BLUE works with the 3D driver out-of-the-box. RED-CYAN requires a bit of tweaking.

The glasses are free, just send Self Addressed Stamped Envelope.

If you try the glasses, and like the effect, you can buy higher quality permanent glasses (I'm going to be getting permanent glasses as the paper ones don't work well with my perscription.)

I like the superbowl ColorCode glasses because they're Yellow-Purple, which means you don't lose contract when playing TF2 (RED team filtered out by the left lens, BLU team by the right lens).
 
Unless a car drives right throw me.. its not "REAL" "3D" its like a miror image 2 but its not backword and are the same, it just makes it appear to be 3d but clearly its not and your not convinced it is, it gives you the illusion it is 3d.

Not wroth the money, I'll wait till we get holograpic gaming or matrix style interaction before I spend big dollers :P I'll probly be 90 when they come out with it but I'll be one happy 90 year old fart lol

i should of grab one of those Hannah Montana 3D glasses before my sister threw them out. >.>
 
I should get 3D glasses also. Just one question. After playing some time don`t you have a killing headache?

I have not had any problem with playing with the glasses for an hour at a time. My only pain comes from the cardboard glasses digging into my skin :(

But, I've noticed that the glasses are more comfortable to wear when there's ambient light; I.E., don't play in the dark with only the monitor for illumination.

Also, if the effect isn't working for you, you can go into the NVIDIA control panel and tweak the depth slider. Sometimes that helps.

I've played the Virtual Boy for 4 hours at a stretch, do Miracle Eye puzzles, read in the dark, and sometimes look directly at arc welders for fun. And I've never gotten a visual headache. Just remember, like any other eyestrain, if you do start feeling eyestrain, take the glasses off for 10 minutes or so, and then go back to playing.

And the cool part about the colorcode settings I gave you is, playing without glasses isn't bad at all. The colors (pastel blue and yellow) only add a bit of ghosting about the characters, so you can keep playing while "resting" your eyes.
