HOW TO: Team Fortress 2 Dedicated Server

Nice, I've always wanted to have a server while I'm not on my computer.

+1 spidEY

There used to be something similar to this posted in the forums, but it was not nearly as detailed as this, and was using the Valve-Server, not the TF2 Dedicated server.

So thank you for taking the time to put this together SpiderMan!

quick question... when creating the .cfg file...do you put in the // blah blah blah (description of what the next line does) or can i just type in the commands? Basically can i copy and paste what you have? or does it need to be edited? i have little to no experience doing anything like this and i am kinda stuck at the .cfg part of the process : ) thanks for the help!!

As I replied to your PM, you can just cut and paste my server.cfg and it should be working without a problem. As for adding new commands, comment lines are not necessary.

1 question, does this work for the other games such as DOD:S and INS?

Sure, it works for all Source based games.

Forwarding ports does what? I can have a lan game with other people without forwarding ports, correct?

In most cases yes. But not all. Depending on your firewall settings(i have 3. Norton, Windows, and my router) you may or may not be able to.

Norton360 for example does close ALOT of ports even on LAN traffic.

I checked the forwarding ports link and was slightly confused. I do this through my router, correct? A general outline of the steps would help! Sorry for being a pain! :confused1:

Bump. I updated the guide, here are the changes:

  • Added a step to avoid the Steam Validation Rejected error
  • Updated the download links for Metamod and SourceMod
  • Added information about RCON
  • Fixed a few spelling mistakes
  • Updated the tv_port example
  • 1200 port is not needed to run a server

:)

I sticky this to the forum. SOMEONE STICKY IT SO I CAN LOOK KEWL!

BTW this works great, now I can achievement far- I mean have sandvich parties with my friends.

You may or may not have a router. If you have more than one computer connected to the internet at home, you have a router. If you have just one, you might be plugged directly into the modem. Or you might have a modem/router in one.

If you know the manufacturer of your router, you can visit their site and look for support for port forwarding.

Also, most ISPs aren't excited about your running servers at home. Most plans probably don't offer enough upstream bandwidth to run a 24+ player server anyway.

:O Spidey! You should know better than bumping almost year old threads! :D

Btw, thanks alot for this. Ive tried a few times but just couldnt get it working, i never knew how to forward ports :P

I tried it and I keep getting the message "STEAM validation error".

Make sure you create steam_appid.txt in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\<your username>\source 2007 dedicated server\tf and write 440 inside it.
