so here is a good medic mystery.

What do you do when you (as a Medic) and the teammate your healing catch fire?

  • Keep healing him and hope another medic comes and heals you too.

    Points: 67 60.4%
  • Let him burn and find a med pack.

    Points: 27 24.3%
  • Pull out the Uberblade and kill him yourself.

    Points: 14 12.6%
  • Admit theres no point and just walk into the front of the Flamethrower.

    Points: 3 2.7%

Tattis is right. Its situational. If your ubercharge is high enough, then don't take the risk and back off (even if your patient dies, your ubercharge is more important). If its just one lone pyro who has already taken a couple hits from your patient, what I like to do is whip out the ubersaw and finish him off quick so you can go back to healing. If done successfully, not only will you get the satisfying kill, but you'll up your ubercharge by 25%.

Depends on the situation.

If I have decent health still and my buddy does not, I will stick with him while looking around for the nearest health pack.

If I have poor health and my medic buddy has poor health, but my ubercharge is almost full, I'll run for the nearest health pack.

If I have poor health and my medic buddy has poor health, but no charge, I'll stick with my buddy.

If we're doing something important like capping a point and I can keep my buddy alive, I will stay as long as I have to to cap and heal.

In this case, your best chance is to keep healing your teammate. If its a heavy, soldier, pyro and maby a demo then, with you healing him, you have the best chance of killing the pyro and giving both of you the highest survival rate. Easy.

The general rule is to keep healing those who need healing until you're either:

1. Low on health.
2. Being gang-rushed by a group that will definitely destroy you.
3. Healing an idiot who rushes into a battle he can't win.

I'd stick with the guy who was burning and hope for the best! :p I wouldn't want my medic to abandon me if I was the other guy.

I may be a bit unorthodox, but in that situation, I whip out my ubersaw, get a couple whacks in on the guy, then switch back to the medi-gun and uber said teammate. Doesn't always work, but so worth it when it does :P

/Bad medic!

Generally, if you've got a competent buddy, you should keep healing your burn victim. He's most likely going to be able to kill the Pyro before he can kill him, thanks to you, and keeping him alive may allow him to kill those three other enemies jumping in through the front door. Had you let him die, you'd have let those guys barrel in with impunity.

Of course, if your partner is competent.

Depends on the situation. If I'm doing the spam healing thing, I'll try to make sure everyone is at least out of red then head off to gather some health myself. If I find someone to manage to latch on to, I let them know that we need to pull back so I can get some health. Most comply, if they don't, they lose their medic buddy and I spam heal/find another person to latch on to. Always protect your medic, and you'll be bessssst friends.

With options like that, I have no choice but pull the saw start hacking away.

Seriously, I would, and I do.

If it's instant respawn, I just keep healing.

However, if it's normal respawn, I stop healing and save myself.
As a medic, you're a HUGE asset to your team, and you're no good dead.
If your healing target, a heavy or a demo, dies, they're more easily replaced by the vast numbers of teamates that aren't snipers/spies/medics.

I find topics like these interesting, because playing TF2, for me, is less pre-arranged tactics and more situational awareness.

Pre-arranged tactics only work if the whole team is in on the tactics. A football team can call "Red 22!" and everyone knows that the plan made in the huddle is now modified to have a different wide reciever, or whatever that code means to them.

But generally, in TF2, short of shouting "Scout rush!" or "All Engies!" there isn't such a high level of planning involved.

When I'm playing medic, what I do in the next second is dictated by the situation I'm in. Becuse there's a few things to consider:

1) Healing somebody gives you uber.
2) Overhealing somebody gives you uber.
3) Healing somebody taking damage gives you more uber than overhealing.
4) Everyone hates being on fire.
5) Dying ruins your uber meter.
6) Some people suck as medic buddies.

The other key is Voice Chat. If everyone is on voice chat, medics can be better medics.

So, if I has been building uber, and am being a medic buddy with a heavy, and a pyro alights both of us, first off, I shouldn't have been so close as to make it that easy. The medigun has long range.

If I'm lit up anyway, I think... Is there a medic kit nearby? How long would it take me to get to it? How much uber do I have? How hot is the action (how likely is it I can even get to the medpack?)? Is there another Medic on my team? Is this Heavy so awesome that he'll do more by being put out than I can accomplish by staying alive? Is the heavy listening to me scream for health?

All those thoughts integrate in my head. If I have high uber, and the heavy is unresponsive to my pleas, and health is nearby, and I have a chance to get it, I ditch the sucker.

If the Heavy is participating in spawn control, and I don't have a lot of uber, and I can't get to health soon enough, I stick it out and spam the medic key. I'll even say in voice chat "I need medical backup at RED spawn!"

If the Heavy is decimating a scout rush, and I'm almost dead, and I have a lot of uber, and we're both on fire, and I don't have chance of getting to a medical kit, I stick to my guns, shout for help, and die.

In all cases, if I'm following a player who treats me like nothing more than a mobile health kit, who drags me into dangerous situations, who doesn't pay attention when I need health ("Medic Buddy" works both ways... I take care of you and you take care of me), I'll buff 'em during setup or when I'm charging Uber, I'll take the edge off their damage, I'll put 'em out, but they're at the bottom of my triage list and I never follow them, and rarely give them Uber (if they're the only heavy in a team of snipers, I swallow my pride, prepare for death, and give em uber.)

Tactics are great if you can get everyone to follow along. In regular TF2 sessions, however, the best you can ever do is sitational awareness.

I usually wait for a medkit to show up.

Normally, if I'm with a competent player (that comes up again.. :p) they realize that their fire'll go out, and they don't need to steal the medkit from the burning Medic.

Again, competent player. :p If my medic has less health than me, he gets the medkit.

I'm a loyal medic. While anybody your teammate kills after you die doesn't show on the stats, healing him/her up to your death increases their chances of killing more people. After all, they're the one with the powerful gun.

In my experience, if I leave the teammate behind I usually get shot from behind anyway. Might as well make good use of what little life is left.
