I would say yes, get the i7 or hold off on rebuilding. I would say get the Nehlem(i7) 920 @ 2.66(.67) ghz. You will be able to overclock it past 3.2 on air so getting a 940 or 965 is not really neccessary.

you will need a new motherboard(x58 socket 1366) and probably ddr3 memory modules.

IMO, I'd stay away from i7 (for now). The gains for personal computer use aren't large enough to justify the huge cost of building an i7 machine (CPU, x58 mobo, DDR3 RAM, etc). You would get nearly the same performance with half the cost with a 775 rig.

All hail Gooda, for he has spoken.

If only money were not a problem... an I7 would be mine (and probably yours as well)!

I have an i7, I encode alot of movies wich makes it alot faster with 8 threads.. but for gaming and normal use you don't get much profit, yet.

Yea for gaming it was only a tid bit better than the qx9550. the performance increase is probably only due to the use of ddr3.

For the cost its not worth it! Get a Phenom II they are beastly cpu!. You can overclock to 3.5-4.0ghz on air cooling. And they are cheaper than the i7 by a huge amount!

The i7 motherboard and processor are amazing. My Dad just built a system using it and 3 sticks of 2gb tri-channel ram and the GeForce 9800GTX Black Edition.

It gets around 80-100 FPS on CoD4. Its Blindingly fast, you really can't go wrong with the i7.

However, if you're getting the i7 processor, get the Cooler Master V8 to put on it instead of the stock cooler. That way you can overclock it.

thats not good then cause I get more fps than that on my rig in cod4.

i7 was targeted for the people who think performance > everything else

from seeing charts @ tom's hardware i'd say that the quad core, core 2 duo is okay

okay so there is a laptop coming out with an i7 in may for those of you without a desktop

If Eurocom indeed ships the laptop.Though Core i7 isn't targeted at laptops.
Intel has said it will release laptop-specific Nehalem chips in the second half of this year.

Yeah, but if you get the 1377 motherboard now, you'll be set for quite a few years.
Getting a 775 rig right now means that you won't be able to upgrade as much in the next few years.

Honestly though, unless you have some excessive money that you don't want to use to just ignite cigars, go ahead.
