hey guys, Voided's posts about his sniper school idea along with the fact that I was sniping against him the other day in 2Fort got me to thinking a little bit about general sniper tactics (especially in 2Fort). I have forever been a corner sniping guy (of course not just sitting there, but I do like finding a corner and moving in and out). This has been the way I have done things since the days of TFC and TF2 hasnt changed much. The reason I have always done this is because I just can't kill anyone OTHER than snipers (and sometimes scouts) when I try quick-scoping because my shots just arent powerfull enough whereas when I find my nice little corner I can headshot and kill anything that tries to jump off the battlements. I would love to hear from any snipers out there who prefer not to corner camp and how (if at all) they kill other classes, especially when there are 1 or 2 snipers to worry about as well.

It really depends on the map. But as a general rule as a sniper. You should always have something to run behind quickly. Breaking LOS is probably the best thing you can do as a sniper, both to stay hidden and protect you from enemy fire.

You can kill 5 out of 9 classes with uncharged headshots. Heavy, Soldier, Demoman and Pyro are the only classes you need to charge your shot for. Except for a overhealed heavy you don't even need a 100% shot anyway.
Your shots definetly are powerful enough.

You have a good point there Calle...I guess I overlooked this because those classes you just mentioned seem to make up 80% of what jumps off the battlements :D

Against good snipers on 2fort I rarely corner snipe. Mainly because my hitbox becomes visible before I can see around the corner.

Against other classes I love to corner snipe.

On 2fort you'll rarely find yourself in a situation where you have the time/safety to quick scope and take out other classes. It's even more rare on IR. Generally the other team always has a few snipers that will give you some trouble and make up the majority of your efforts. After you take out the other snipers, you get about 10~ or so seconds of free time before the snipers return.

If, for whatever reason, the other team is lacking in snipers, I personally stay scoped for long periods of time and actually charge my shots.

If you're interested in killing other classes first and snipers second, you should definitely play on maps such as warpath, cashworks, and occasionally blackmesa.

Lies. Ive done it... :)

I lost the game BTW

The "sniper code" that I have noticed up to this point in my tf2 adventure makes me sad. :(

If I get a charged body shot on another sniper I'm a "NOOB FULL POWERED BODY SHOT NOOB, LEARN 2 SNIPE!!" sometimes I miss headshots and hit shoulders, don't blame me for using the tools I have.

"NOOB CORNER SNIPER, HIDEING UNTIL YOUR SHOTS ARE FULL POWER!!!" When I see snipers out in the open dancing around like he has ants in his pants, it makes me alittle sad. To me, that is NOT a sniper. I'm going to use what is around me for cover, that to me is a smart sniper. I'm not saying that the "dancing sniper" is a tactic that won't work (because it does *cough 2fort cough*) I'm saying to me, that isn't what a sniper does. A good sniper should be taking out important targets, and getting a few kills (or more) before the team knows where you are.

to sum it up:
Corner Sniping: Good tactic
Charging up shots: if your not using this, then your doing it wrong (my opinion)
Dancing Sniper: Is useful in some situations, like a sniper at the front of battle at choke points and such, but otherwise confuses me when used most of the time. (seems more of a point whore tactic)

This is my opinion, so If you disagree, please send me a PM and we can talk about it over some lemonade.

What xosniper said.

Everyone has to remember there are two tactics to sniping. Both work equally as well and are good for different situations.

I generally tend to just erratically move back and forth on top of the battlements, generally crouching the instant before I fire to prevent head shots from other snipers. Doesn't usually work against good snipers. :(

I've also been moving my look sensitivity from 2.0 to 1.0 whenever playing sniper recently. Seems to work.

My first piece of advice would be to not be a sniper on 2fort. It's pretty much a complete waste, considering you spend most of your time counter-sniping, which gets old after awhile.

That being said, whenever I play sniper on 2fort (for reference: I pretty much only play Warpath, and pretty much always as a sniper) I always play for quick-scoping, and jumping around in the middle of the battlement. My logic is, it's the most effective tactic for:

a) countersniping, as you gain a wider field of vision
b) sniping support classes (see wider field of vision)
c) not presenting yourself as an easy stationary target for the usual annoying spies.

Again though, as maps go, 2fort is pretty annoying for a sniper.

Agreed, I love hearing when someone complains when there's like 5 snipers in 2fort. I've tried to play sniper before and found it too aggravating, then again as you mentioned 2fort isn't exactly the best sniper level. So I just stick to soldier and pray I don't get headshotted.

I can't seem to add you...
It says your friendlist is full..

If by corner sniping you mean hiding behind a corner and popping out to take a shot, then it works in some situations. My style is to stay in the open and take shots at any targets I can see. Thing is, my style relies heavily on reflexes. I can usually kill another sniper before they scope or the moment they scope. While scoped, I try to stay very aware of corners and I can usually spot the tip of the snipers hat just before he comes around the corner. You need to use a bit of both(Quick scope and Corner) to be really effective.

To anyone that says you're sniping sucks because you are taking body shots, forget them. Snipers are a high priority target to other snipers and your only thought should be to kill them right away. You'd be surprised how often you can kill those "dancing" snipers with a fully charged body shot while they think they have you fooled.

Mind you, I almost never play 2fort, so whether or not these tactics work there is not something I know of.

.

I actually always try for the full powered nut shot on the dancing snipers, lol.

I get a lot of hand/arm shots that people complain about. They think I'm just full-charging and shooting for the chest, but mostly it's just hitbox lag while I'm aiming for the head.

As for cornersniping vs dancing? I think everyone has covered that pretty well. One thing about cornersniping though is the absolute need to relocate after a kill. If you are upstairs, head downstairs. If the downstairs is full of enemies, pick a different class and discourage those enemies from living in your front door :)
